She inspired our 3rd daughter to apply for astronaut training. Alas, there were 30,000+ applications for a hundred or so openings and our daughter does not have her PhD.

Never-the-less she helped build a laboratory module that is now on the Space Station. And she is currently a systems engineer on the Orion Capsule!

Thank you, Sally Ride!

I always think of her when I hear the line from the song “Mustang Sally,”
all you want to do is ride around Sally,
ride Sally Ride!

Oh, well, yet another person to be proud of
when we *had* a space program.

The only good thing that Obama has done is stop funding taxpayer money to NASA.....Definitely not in the constitution!!!!

However, RIP to this lady.

Dying at 61 is much too damned young to die for a hero to so many.

R.I.P.

RIP. Thanks for pioneering solutions to persistent problems in U.S. spacecraft architecture that prevented women from flying in space for any appreciable length of time until Sally came along. Thanks for the GRAIL MoonKam, and EarthKAM, reaching out to young scientists at an age when they might still be reached.

No thanks for the Augustine Commission II results nor for the continuing maxed out contributions to Obama.

Whatever. A real class act, despite her politics.

Lord Jesus, rest this courageous woman with the saints and comfort her family.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, amen.

So she was a lesbian ... big deal. She had the sense to keep the focus on what she did in and for aerospace, and for the role model she became, not on her choice of partner. In short, she knew that "the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing."

How sad it must've been for her though, to see what the Empty Suit has done to NASA on these last years or so of her life.

So now that cancer no longer has her, may there truly be a peaceful rest for a hell of a lady, and for (in her own small way) one of Billy Joel's inspirations.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

Sunward I’ve climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things

You have not dreamed of wheeled and soared and swung

High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,

I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless falls of air...

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue

I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace

Where never lark, nor eer eagle flew—

And, while with silent lifting mind I’ve trod

The high, untrespassed sanctity of space,

Put out my hand and touched the face of God.

And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth

You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
