Greenland’s mineral rush 'could lead to independence' (and then EU enslavement)

Courted by multinational companies and foreign heads of state over its rare minerals and potential oil resources, Greenland could win full independence from Denmark and join the European Union as a free state, according to one expert on the Arctic.

Greenland’s leader Kuupik Kleist is boxing above his weight when it comes to foreign policy.

Although the premier represents an autonomous island of just 57,000 people, within the last couple of months he has met with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, European Commission President José Manuel Barroso and representatives from the Chinese government.

Greenland is a self-ruled territory in the Kingdom of Denmark. Although it was granted home rule in 1979, the Danish government is still in charge of foreign affairs, defense, police and justice, as well as financial policy.

Denmark also provides the territory with an annual subsidy of 3.4 billion kroner (€457 million; $552 million).

Besides raising the interest of climate researchers, Greenland offers a treasure of natural resources, commodities and possibly oil. In a century where natural resources are becoming scarcer, the cold Arctic country is getting politically hotter. …

There is no “full independence” in the EU unless one is out of the EU. As part of Denmark, it’s one of the EU’s “overseas countries and territories”; the EU is not going to let that go, especially with its strategic proximity to the US and Canada, never mind the minerals there.

Probably more important for them to join NATO. NATO was formed in part due to the instigation of Norway. After World War II Soviet subs used to flagrantly violate Norwegian territorial waters. The Norwegians, who had been occupied by the Nazis for five years, prevailed on the U.S. and Britain to form a Western alliance.

The Russians have been trying for decades to intimidate the Canadians over Artic mineral rights, despite their close ties to the U.S. A truly independent Greenland is in no way a viable country, they will need some sort for big brother for protection.

Now there is an in your face yet to be proven statement. That and “raising the interest of climate researchers”.

How so? You think they want to reintroduce grapes to the economy of southern Greenland?

Various parts of North and South America (mostly islands) are already in the EU—St. Pierre and Miquelon, French and Dutch Caribbean islands, French Guiana, the Falkland Islands (known to Obama as “the Maldives”), as well as Greenland. But if Greenland becomes independent it would be the first complete nation-state in the Americas to belong to the European Union.
