27 gigawatts of coal-fired capacity to retire over next five years
Energy Information Administration ^ | July 27, 2012 | Energy Information Administration

Posted on 07/30/2012 5:34:13 AM PDT by thackney

Plant owners and operators report to EIA that they expect to retire almost 27 gigawatts (GW) of capacity from 175 coal-fired generators between 2012 and 2016. In 2011, there were 1,387 coal-fired generators in the United States, totaling almost 318 GW. The 27 GW of retiring capacity amounts to 8.5% of total 2011 coal-fired capacity.

The coal-fired capacity expected to be retired over the next five years is more than four times greater than retirements performed during the preceding five-year period (6.5 GW). Moreover, based on EIA data, the approximate 9 GW of coal-fired capacity retirements expected to occur in 2012 will likely be the largest one-year amount in the nation's history. The record is, however, expected to be short-lived as almost 10 GW of coal-fired capacity are expected to retire in 2015.

These planned retirement values reflect the early release version of the 2011 reports by plant owners and operators on the Form EIA-860, "Annual Electric Generator Report." The data are subject to change and may not reflect all the retirements that companies are considering. Respondents to this survey include industrial and commercial generators, as well as those in the electric power sector.

The table above shows that the coal generators that retired between 2009 and 2011 had an average size of 59 megawatts (MW). By contrast, the average size of a coal-fired plant planned for retirement between 2012 and 2015 is 154 MW, more than twice the average size of the units retired during the 2009-2011 period. Twelve units of at least 200 MW are expected to retire in 2012, including two 790 MW units. Another 13 coal-fired units with generating capacities of 200 MW or greater are expected to retire in 2015—this is close to the average size of all coal units existing in 2011 (228 MW).

The table also underscores that plants planned for retirement are more efficient than previously-retired plants. By 2015, the retiring coal-fired units will have average tested heat rates of about 10,700 British thermal units per kilowatthour; these coal-fired units are approximately 12% more efficient than the group of units, on average, that retired during 2009-2011, but 5% less efficient than the average coal unit.

Seriously, though, everyone who's hooked up to natgas should have a standby generator for the "down" times and the rolling blackouts. My hope is that it will hit the libs the hardest.

We have a 300 year supply of coal and Osama Obama & Friends want every bit of it kept in the ground. Why should *they* care? Electricity at $1/kWh is no problem for them.Their $50 million book deals and their trust funds will take care of it easily.

Another “gift” we owe liberals for. What a horrible waste of money, both tax-payer and corporate, for no other reason than the pursuit of another liberal chimera, AGW.

And we’re eliminating other potential sources of hydro power by ripping out dams. I just read about another near Traverse city Michigan yesterday. The estimated cost of a modern generator retrofit is around $2 million and the cost of tearing the dam out is about the same. However the retrofit would actually produce power for years to come and tearing the dam out will forever remove it as a potential producer.

Things are gonna get real bad in coming years.

We can FIRE OBAMA FIRST!

Then, Romney can fire the necessary EPA staff, and overturn ALL orders to close power plants, and restart our exploration and recovery.

Cars w Obama stickers on them shouldn’t be allowed to fill up at gas stations.

The market-clearing price for new 2015 capacity – almost all natural gas – was $136 per megawatt. That’s eight times higher than the price for 2012, which was just $16 per megawatt.

Thack, my biggest electrical expenditure by far is A/C.

Is there any potential on nat gas powered home A/C units?

Or maybe even crazier, what are the economics of at home nat gas powered electrical generation?

Even with several Dems voting for it, that Senate resolution stopping Obama went to defeat thanks to Snowe, Collins, Ayott, Alexander and Brown voting with the rest of the Dems.....

Just as campers have natural gas refrigerators available, nat gas AC is available.

But if a huge amount of coal-fired power generation is shut down, do not expect natural gas to stay cheap, IMO.

“Relative prices of natural gas and coal as sources of energy, which have moved in favor of natural gas with the boom in shale gas production” This is due to the regs that Obama placed on the indusrty right? I want to say something uneducated like FUBO but this is a situation that is self explanatory. Obama said about coal...
“So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it’s just that it will bankrupt them because they’re going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted”

It all comes down to pipeline schedules and how fast we build pipes from where the new gas is being found to deliver to where it will be consumed.

The price will be influenced by that more than anything.

I don't think gas could get cheap enough to make it economical to power your home through a NG generator. I've looked into it. The equipment cost alone would cost you more than your electrical bill for 18 months, depending on how much you use.

Look into radiant barriers, attic fans, and evaporative cooling (depending on your climate). I have the radiant barrier sheathing and you can really tell that it is cooler in the house than outside. Plus, with a walkout basement, an attic fan and a sprinkler set up outside the "intake" through the basement windows, it has to get really hot to be unbearable.

Well Mr B, based on the map of closures, you just might get your wish, but the way I understand how the grid works, by switching magic my guess would be we are all going to suffer equally. You know, the “fairness doctrine”.

Of course, when I was about ten or twelve, I understood the fairness doctrine to be what it was, horse hockey. The world isn’t fair, and if you build your life on the premise, you are sure to be disappointed all your days. Not aimed at you Mr B.

This EPA insanity is called by one local power company, “the train wreck”. It is a list of dates related to all of the demands on power companies to comply with the insanity. Believe me they cannot afford not to comply unless the full faith and sovereignty of the state in which they reside is behind them.

I personally have not yet seen the states rising up in anger at this treatment of their citizens, but if the cold hits and the blackouts occur, or the heat wave is not cooled by air conditioning, maybe they will get with it.

The thing that keeps people from being angry at the government is their comfort level.

When the tyranny reaches the point where they can’t watch American Idol in 72 degree homes while eating microwaved frozen TV dinners, more of them are going to start taking notice.

Mitt Romney had better put a halt to this economy wrecking insanity when he gets elected. Or Americans should raise holy hell!! (excuse the expression)

I hate this eco-BS. This is what spoiled brats who live in big cities do when they get in charge. They have no idea how big and forgiving our land is

Note that I’m not saying a NG standby generator isn’t a good idea - I’m getting one myself. Just that using it instead of utility power when utility power is available doesn’t make sense.

The EPA has picked all the low hanging polluting fruit and that is a good thing for all of us.

Now however, the EPA, in order to perpetuate their existence, and to help obama and his fellow marxist travelers destroy the USA by eliminating its source of energy, will continue well beyond coal plants and go after oil fired then natural gas fired plants as they all emit plant food (CO2). Remember the dark lord promised to make energy prices skyrocket.

Nukes will continue to be demonized regardless of the statistical evidence which prove their relative safety. More people in the USA have died in Ted Kennedy’s car than in a US build reactor.

As stated in another post, some dams are being removed so hydro will be reduced.

The marxist progressives hiding behind the green label will turn on wind power as it kills birds/bats/skittle pooping unicorns...

Solar cannot possibly handle a 24 hour electric demand of any magnitude to supplant the loss of other producers shut down by the EPA.

The EPA will become known as the Energy Prevention Agency.

Meanwhile, China, and other filth laden countries will continue to pollute at a much greater rate offsetting any further minuscule reductions in the USA all while using their free access to energy to keep their industries running at full tilt while ours become vacant land.
