Kucinich couldn’t win that district.

Probably not.

He’s veered too far left and too kooky over the years.

But in a blue wave year, he might.

Plus he has a some credibility as the only guy who went to DC and did not get rich off it.

Yeah, although that mainly was before the new WA-10 was drawn (Kucinich was hoping for a more lefty district and for Adam Smith to stay in the WA-09). When OH Republicans drew a new district from his bailiwick in West Cleveland through Lorain to Toledo, he ran there instead, but lost the primary to Toledo’s Kaptur.

After losing the primary, Kucinich went through the motions of considering moving to the Seattle area, but Adam Smith would have beaten him in the primary and I don’t think he really was considering seriously it at that late stage. It would have been fun to see a recent presidential candidate lose two House primaries in two states in the same year.

When Fingerhut represented the district (then numbered the OH-19), it had a finger that winnowed far west into heavily Dem areas south of Cleveland. I don’t think that Fingerhut would be a very good candidate for the Dems in the new OH-14; they’d be better off with some blue-collar county official from Lake or Ashtabula Counties.

You know what Democrat used to represent part of the district in Congress? Jim Traficant! (The old 17th stretched into northeast and north-central Trumbull County until the 2000 Census, and those areas are in the new OH-14.) He’s out of prison now, and certainly would make the race entertaining. Somehow, however, I don’t see OH Dems managing to convince the Democrat nominee to step down and then replacing him on the ballot with Jim Traficant. : )

Sadly it looks like there will be no primary as the party bosses will pick the GOP candidate, and the Democrat too if Dale Virgil Blanchard drops out.

Update: (Perennial Candidate) Dale Virgil Blanchard has no plans to drop out of congressional race

I have no idea who local Republicans will nominate to succeed Steve LaTourette. A great choice IMHO would be state Representative Ronald Young, a fervent TEA Party conservative from Lake County. Problem is that LaTourette dislikes him and the local party establishment has some problems with him, as well. Matthew Dolan is definitely in the running, and given his youth (he looks like a college student) and his family’s prominence, he’s in the running. Some are talking David Joyce as a compromise candidate, which is what happened in Illinois (Rodney Davis). I suppose we’ll see, but any input from Ohio Freepers would be appreciated.

Goldwater, the Dems would like to pull Mr. Blanchard for Capri Cafaro, she ran against LaTourette in 2004 and is currently occupying a state senate seat.

David Joyce, Geauga Co prosecutor replaces Steve LaTourette

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/48616394

Republican leaders in the 14th Congressional District selected Geauga County Prosecutor David Joyce on Friday to replace nine-term U.S. Rep. Steven LaTourette on the Nov. 6 ballot.

Joyce landed the nomination in a meeting of GOP chairs and central committee secretaries from the seven counties that make up the district, Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Portage, Summit and Trumbull.

Joyce, who has served as prosecutor in a reliably Republican county since 1988, has directed the high-profile case against a 17-year-old charged with killing three students in a shooting rampage in February at Chardon High School.

Joyce will likely be favored over Democrat Dale Virgil Blanchard, who has run for Congress 10 times.

Joyce said in a phone interview that he was ready to take a conservative but practical message of belt-tightening to Congress.

“There’s going to have to be some shared sacrifice here to make this system work,” he said.

“The economy’s out of whack. Everybody in this community I know has tightened their belts to make it work for their family: I think Washington needs to do the same.”

Thank goodness for being able to borrow a computer.

As mentioned in a previous posting, David Joyce is a compromise candidate. He’s more conservative than Steven LaTourette, but is still acceptable to the establishment types, and it helps that he and LaTourette have been friends since the late 1980’s. Also to be factored is that he has an affable, annassuming personality and is rather elderly, meaning that a number of young politicios will be waiting for him to retire. All in all, conservatives did OK this time, even though they didn’t triumph.
