Tea Party Favorite Wins Texas Runoff
New Yotk Times ^ | July 31, 2012 | ERIK ECKHOLM

HOUSTON — Ted Cruz, an insurgent backed by the Tea Party, defeated the candidate favored by Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday in a runoff election for the Republican Senate nomination that revealed a wide rift in Texas between the party establishment and restless, anti-incumbent activists on the right.

With the come-from-behind victory, he is heavily favored to win the Senate seat being vacated in November by Kay Bailey Hutchison and appears likely to become a star of the national conservative movement.

Mr. Cruz, 41, is the latest conservative rebel to bring down an established party leader, tapping into simmering anger and anti-incumbent frustration within the Republican ranks nationwide.

These dissident triumphs include, in this year’s primaries, the defeat of Senator Richard G. Lugar of Indiana by Richard E. Mourdock and Deb Fischer’s win over a veteran Republican for the Senate nomination in Nebraska. They also echo Marco Rubio’s Senate victory in 2010 over a sitting Republican governor, Charlie Crist of Florida.

Mr. Cruz, who is Cuban-American, has drawn comparisons to Mr. Rubio, another 40-something Cuban-American who quickly became an icon of fiscal and religious conservatives around the country. Mr. Cruz’s rapid ascent has already shaken up the Texas Republican Party.

“Mr. Cruz’s success shows that the center of the state party has moved decisively to the right,” said James Henson, a political scientist at University of Texas. “The Republicans are in much more treacherous terrain, not because of threats from Democrats, but threats from within the party.”

Quite an amazing feat considering how we haven't been hearing much from them and how hard the MSM, left-wing liberal DemoRats totally impugned the Tea Party, did all they could to marginalize Obama's biggest political threat other than himself.

I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at the NYT editor’s office when they had to go with the story.

Progressive Democrats for Dewhurst FAILED in their efforts, I see.

Whoever made those grainy, sleazy TV ads for Dewhurst should never get another job. They were pathetic and did more to drive voters to the polls to vote for Cruz than anything else.

Barf.

The idiots at the NYT quotes a Dem professor at the University of Texas as an authority. What tripe.

UT is that great bastion of liberalism which is held in high contempt by the older grads and most of the state. Austin is the Left Coast of Texas.

If you were to give Texas an enema, Academia in Austin would be where you would start.

Bullstalin. As the DNC went "New Democrat", other Democrats went RINO. It's called TAKING THE GOP BACK.

Democrat poli-sci professors aren't looking out for Republican "interests".

Of course, take this with a grain of salt. UT is in Austin, which could be Greenwich Village or San Fransisco.

Now, if a Professor at A & M said this...

I’d be more concerned. (LOL)

_____________________________________________________________

They’re not the only ones. I heard Philip Klein on “FOX News at 9:00” in Beaumont, TX tonight. He is a Republican political analyst, here in Southeast Texas, and he said the Ted Cruz victory shows that the Tea Party is “politically dangerous”. THIS IS A REPUBLICAN saying this. I sent him an e-mail and let him know that I was offended at his comment and that the Tea Party is here to stay and the GOP, “good ol’ boy” network can deal with it.

At 10:00 p.m. CDT, with 75 percent of the vote counted, Cruz is leading the long-time, Texas politician and current Lt. Governor, David Dewhurst by an astounding 56 - 44 Percent.

Gov. Rick Perry went all out for Dewhurst. Don’t be surprised if Governor “Good-hair”, who embarrassed the State of Texas with his Presidential run, does NOT serve another term as Governor of Texas.

Reverse “Operation Chaos” didn’t work.
In my polling place, they new if you voted in the 1st original primary or not.
If this was your 1st time to vote, they asked what party’s ballot you wanted.
If it was on record which primary you voted for, that was whose ballot you received now.
Brilliant.
My wife did not vote in the original primary and was asked which ballot she needed.(trust me, she was on the “right” side).
I was on record from the original primary, and I got my proper ballot.
