Airport screeners, gov't agree on labor contract

WASHINGTON—The union representing nearly 45,000 airport screeners has reached a first-ever collective bargaining agreement with the Transportation Security Administration. The agreement, reached Thursday, comes more than a year after TSA head John Pistole agreed to grant screeners limited union rights for the first time since the agency was formed in 2001.

It includes a new process for resolving disciplinary matters and a better system for increasing pay based on performance, said John Gage, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents TSA workers.

"What this contract will do is provide for increased uniformity on fair treatment and the other issues important to employees across the nation's airports," Gage added.

The agreement was reached after months of tough negotiations and with the help of federal mediators. Union members still must vote to ratify the contract.

I don't suppose pay can be decreased for poor performance, and I'm sure it will be impossible to ever fire someone. I feel safer already.

Who was there to represent the taxpayers' interests? Seeing as we're footing the bill.

I wonder what the pay scale looks like. Probably the average overweight slug patting you down will be earning 100k without overtime. Plus retirement and lifetime healthcare.

Who is EVER there representing the taxpayers in any public sector union / government labor negotiations? It’s always Christmas and the taxpayers are always Santa Clause.

Rough handling of traveler genitalia is expected, but bonuses will be paid for every handicapped American humiliated and each elderly American insulted.

Terrorists travel free of charge.

At the local level, it is your city council.

When was the last time you attended a city council meeting, took to the podium and told the city council to lower the pay of the union city employees?
