Poll Position: Will today’s Chick-fil-A ‘kiss-in’ be successful?
AJC ^ | Aug 3 2012 | Kyle Wingfield

Posted on 08/03/2012 9:56:24 AM PDT by scottjewell

The “buycott” of Chick-fil-A on Wednesday produced what the company will only describe as an “unprecedented day” for business. Today, we get the counter-protest...in the form of a “kiss-in” by gay couples angry about remarks made by company president Dan Cathy.

Will it be as successful?

Boycotts have a revered place in American history as an effective form of protest, in large part because of the role they played in the civil rights movement.

Lately, however, the tactic’s record is much more spotty. Looking at one list of current boycotts, I don’t see many, if any, that I’d count as successful.

Now, a “kiss-in” isn’t exactly the same thing as a boycott; I have no idea how many of the reported 15,000 people nationwide who say they’re participating in today’s protest will buy a chicken sandwich while they’re there. But it is similar in that it’s an attempt to shame a company into a certain action by applying public pressure.

My own theory about this is that activists are reaching a point of diminishing returns when it comes to pressuring corporations, in large part because they have succeeded in pressuring many companies into some form of “corporate social responsibility.” ...

So according to my theory, even setting aside the Cathy family’s obvious and longtime commitment to their beliefs, a company like Chick-fil-A feels less pressure to acquiesce to one group’s demands because it can point to a long list of corporate “good behavior.” The company and its owners stood on higher moral ground, so to speak, to start with.

...

Just vote in the nearby poll and explain yourself in the comments thread below.

ADDED: I doubt this kind of action, while unrelated to kissing, will engender much sympathy for the cause of today’s protesters.

Will today’s Chick-fil-A ‘kiss-in’ be successful?

How do you define "success"?

If success means getting Mr. Cathy to recant and state publically that he supports Gay Marriage, then they will not be successful.

If success means getting a turnout as large as Wednesday's (or one tenth Wednesday's), then they will not be successful be either measure.

If success means getting pictures of same-sex smooching into the newspaper and the local news, they will be successful in that. I can't imagine what they think they will have accomplished, however.

Le Fags are not going to be spending much if any moola.

They will be trying to prove a point and not (NOT) supporting the business as our side did - by actually purchasing product.

Kiss this you mudda flocking dingbats! Lean over and grab yourself by the bootstraps and pull your heads out of that dark and dank crevasse you customarily place it in times like this.

I went to the local one today. There were four protesters outside. One was dressed like a cow and had a sign that said “HATE is a fowl business practice”. That is not original. I have seen it elsewhere on the internet. One of the local TV stations was filming them. The TV station was not there on Wednesday when I was there.

Business inside was MUCH less than Wednesday. It was back to normal, which means a short line that moves fairly fast. On Wednesday, there were easily several hundred waiting in line when I left the building.

Here’s the new attack strategy based on what I am seeing floating around the social networking sites: leftists are saying that it would have been nice to see lines to volunteer at soup kitchens rather than lines at Chick-Fil-A. Also, they are organizing some sort of food bank event to support equality. This tagline is some drivel like “They fed themselves to support Hate. Let’s feed others to support equality.”

Hilarious. They are actually attempting to chide a group that is far more charitable than they will ever be.

But that’s how they are going to attack now.

“”...15,000 people nationwide who say they’re participating in today’s protest,...””

It looked like they had that many customers in the Hixson, TN store alone on Wednesday! These puffers are pikers.

I hope a million gay couples show up at CFAs around the country, I hope pictures of them kissing are plastered all over the news and I hope 310 million Americans see it. Then we'll see if they thought their kiss-in as a great idea. Bring it!

I like IowaHawk’s tweet: “Hawt lesbians making out and chicken sandwiches?!? Is this Heaven?”

Most gays went on Wednesday due to free speech so I doubt the 10 folks who are making the most fuss will make a dent.

But each of those ten will make the front page news. I have no doubt that a big part of what's going on today will be media driven, sort of like the way NBC rigs their "news" reports.

The media would have loved to ignore what went on Wednesday, but local media outlets simply couldn't ignore them... The fact that there had to be police directing traffic around every Chick-Fil-A in the greater KC area precluded them being able to ignore it.

Of course. They had no chance of repeating a victory like Wed. I think it would have been better if they just didn’t even announce this.

Would you take this home to meet mother? It will be a flop, but the msm will call it a success.

The only CFA in NYC is located a few blocks up from Greenwich Village. I could just imagine a bunch of flamers bicycling up there in their cute skin tight spandex....never mind, pardon me while I hurl.

The only problem with that statement is that “hawt lesbians” are, um... not found in the wild. If anyone sees lesbians kissing at a Chick-fil-A, they’re more likely to look like Michael Moore with a mullet.

Isn’t the Friday evening news slot the time pols try to get stories buried, because so few people watch at that time?

I have no doubt that all of the lamestream media newscasts tonight will portray it as tremendously successful, with carefully selected and edited videos depicting nice, clean, respectable looking homosexuals giving each other chaste kisses in front of Chik-fil-A stores.

The reality is that in most stores, no protestors will show up. In the stores where they do show up, it will resemble most gay rights parades (e.g., ugly bull dykes and transvestites performing public sex exhibitions).

Swung by CFA for lunch today. The only couple I saw kissing were by a car in the parking lot - it was one of the girls who works the drive through window and her boyfriend.
