Judge releases nun who broke into U.S. nuclear bomb facility

A U.S. magistrate judge on Friday ordered the release pending trial of an 82-year-old nun and another anti-nuclear activist charged with breaching security fences at one of the most sensitive U.S. nuclear facilities, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where weapons-grade uranium is kept.

The security failure was an embarrassment for the National Nuclear Security Administration, or NNSA, the Energy Department branch that operates U.S. nuclear weapons plants, and for the international security firm G4S, which owns WSI Oak Ridge, the contractor responsible for protecting the facility.

G4S was also at the center of a dispute over security at the London Olympic Games.

Officials said the facility was shut down on Wednesday at least until next week after peace activists Megan Rice, 82, Michael Walli, 63, and Greg Boertje-Obed, 57, cut through perimeter fences to reach the outer wall of a building where highly enriched uranium, a key nuclear bomb component, is stored.

Crikey, if an 82 year old nun and two others can break into a nuclear facility then something is seriously wrong.

Scares the crap out of me that one of our most secure nuclear facilities can be breeched by an 82 year old. Tells me that those in charge of such facilities are not up to the job or are not taking it seriously. What if the infiltrators had been a well-trained group of saboteurs?

I could almost thank this nun for bringing this vulnerability to our attention.

Known as ROR (release on own recognizance). Judge doesn’t consider her a flight risk.

Judge doesn’t consider her a flight risk.

How about her breaking into more high security areas and other terroristic risks?

Go for it, if she does/can, it is good for our security ... would bring other security flaws to our attention.

I think it would be more appropriate for the judge to release her when “a mental health caregiver” was willing to attest that she will now be under supervision “for her own good”, in that her “faculties seem to be diminished”.

How is attempting to breach a secure nuclear facility not considered an act of terrorism?

Seems this nun makes a habit of these things.

Please.

There are people on this forum who think that a perp ought to be allowed to get at least a full mag off at the cops first to make it fair. You think the security there could get away with shooting a nun?

In all seriousness. People like this KNOW that “security” as it is practiced in the US is a sad joke. It is all smoke and mirrors I have heard a former ranking member of the Mossad say “You are not yet ready to do what must be done to defend yourselves. But you will learn.” (the hard way).

Does the judge realize that she's a serious flight risk? Nuns used to fly all of the time back in the 60s.

I wonder if this the jerkette who used sneak onto SAC bases and damage equipment and aircraft.
