Obama angers military groups with lawsuit against Ohio early voting law
Washington Examiner ^ | August 4, 2012 | Joel Gehrke

Fifteen Ohio military groups have gone to court to oppose an “offensive” lawsuit filed by President Obama’s campaign that challenges a law allowing military members to vote on days when the rest of the state cannot.

“The Obama campaign’s and Democratic National Committee’s argument that it is arbitrary and unconstitutional to afford special consideration, flexibility, and accommodations to military voters to make it easier for them to vote in person is not only offensive, but flatly wrong as a matter of law,” the military groups — which include the Marine Corps League, the Association of the U.S. Army, and the Association of the U.S. Navy — argued in their filing.

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also attacked Obama over the issue. “President Obama’s lawsuit claiming it is unconstitutional for Ohio to allow servicemen and women extended early voting privileges during the state’s early voting period is an outrage,” Romney said in a statement today.

Watch Obama getting all paranoid about having ANY armed member of the Armed Forces near him from now on, he has already on occasion disarmed troops with harms distance from him at some military events.

I hope there is some deeper dialogues taking place in key places on how to counter this. I would say exactly what I think but I would prefer to be not Federally incarcerated.

Well, it’s certainly not unconstitutional to allow differing days for military voters to cast ballots, so the 0bama lawsuit will fail. In the final analysis, the 0bama camp is trying to discriminate against military personnel who don’t have the free access to polling locations that private citizens do.

Yep. Looking forward to the plants and trolls to clear up the confusion on behalf of Obama.

Watch how quickly and quietly the military vote will be disenfranchised...as per usual.

We need to alert our congresscritters that we are watching to make SURE our wonderful men and women in the military have ample time to have THEIR votes counted in the November election.

Bath-House Barry will do everything in his power (and Valerie Jarrett will, too) to see to it that our military is DENIED the vote to throw this commieCIC the hell out of OUR house.

Methinks the demonrats are fighting mightily to lie and cover up the fact they attacked Ohio for allowing military a couple extra days to get in an early vote.

They are now claiming they just seek more early voting for everyone, but in fact they did argue it is unconstitutional to give service members a break.

I’m VERY glad Romney spoke up (credit where due) but the Ohio stare GOP and dems with a sliver of decency in them really need to take this and run hard. Codify it in the state. constitution-whatever it takes to enshrine it beyond politics. And that goes for the other 56 states as well.

Because next time they will just try it again with different wording.

And Congress needs to stop the simmilar BS at that level that has polluted the last few elections. HELLO JOHNNY?!?!?!? USE that leadership post for once for something besides democrat benefit.

I know this story is being repeated in this form in multiple reputable news outlets, but it seems just to be a wrong interpretation of what is really happening.

Yes, Obama and the DNC are suing. but they are NOT suing to eliminate the early voting for the military. They are suing to give everybody the same early voting.

So you could claim that they are taking away the advantage given to military voters. But they aren’t trying to eliminate early voting for the military.

What IS true is that their argument COULD be taken by a judge to suggest eliminating the early voting for the military. It would be an equally “valid” solution to the complaint they are making — which is that the military doesn’t deserve special treatment.

That is where they can be attacked, but by claiming they are trying to take away the early voting for military, it allows Obama to claim with some truth that he isn’t doing that, and then the truth of what he is doing gets obscured.

Get ready for the “I believe it because Obama would do it” responses from FReepers. This must have been posted on FR a dozen times already in the past 2-3 days, despite having been clarified and “debunked” in the first couple of hours of the original wrong report.

The original shame of deliberately mischaracterizing the lawsuit goes to Breitbart.com. Andrew would have been ashamed of playing lefty games like this.

What is offensive and flatly wrong is that piss-ant demi-god sitting in the Whitehouse and his ‘let-them-eat-cake’ wife touring the world on taxpayer money while our military people, who Bozo Obama now wants to disfranchise, die in foreign counties.

I think there should be a law that no votes until ALL of the military votes.

“Pass the popcorn ping!”

What kind of an abject buffoon must you be to pull this kind of crap 90 days out from an election?

A losing buffoon who wants to knock off any opposition votes that he can!

Beyond pathetic.

Why should he care if they’re mad if they can’t vote against him?

Besides, Obama gave them the right to openly bugger each other now, so what do they have to complain about?

NO one is taking away early voting for all.

Early voting in Ohio is available for EVERYONE right up until the Friday before the election. If you can’t get there by Friday, then you vote on Tuesday.

The law allows an extra 3 days (Sat-Mon) for military members who may have missed out on the early voting due to service. It’s not like they are the only ones getting early voting.

Obama does not want the military to get the extra days. Pretty clear cut.

If I live in Ohio, I can vote 3 days ahead, drive down to my Florida Condo and vote there on the 3rd day? I hear that a lot of NY’ers do that especially if they’re from the 5 boroughs and L.I.. Can this be done? Naahh, probably all myth.

I would be in favor of the Heinlein formula ... only those who have served in some capacity in the US military have the franchise, which they would receive as soon as their term of service ends. Then again, I also think televised public floggings as a criminal punishment, and a return to hangings for capital convictions for things like murder and vote tampering, would do quite a lot to reduce crime.

This isn’t one I would have taken on. Obama and his team look terrible doing this.

If these folks serve in the armed forces protecting this nation, give them an accommodation. Hell, the left has been all about easing any restrictions whatsoever when it comes to voting including supporting felons to vote.

Are they now saying felons are better prospects for voting.

What happened to keep the polls open for weeks, and you don’t have to show your I.D.?

Now they’re clamping down, and the members of the military are the first group in the bulls-eye?

Good grief.

I agree with you. The inaccuracies are not helping the situation.

But here’s where it’s still a problem: By applying ‘equal protection under the law’ this could end the rights of servicemembers to have extended voting in other states where it is available.

They’re turning it into a constitutional nightmare and this could end extended voting for all military members.
