The Chinese Foreign Ministry's over the weekend condemned a U.S. State Department statement that said Washington was closely monitoring territorial disputes in the South China Sea, and that China's establishment of a military garrison for the area risks "further escalating tensions in the region".
The mosaic of rival territorial claims in the South China Sea has become Asia's worst potential military flashpoint.
Beijing has said its disputes with Vietnam, the Philippines and other southeast Asian claimants should be settled one-on-one, and it has bristled at U.S. backing for a multilateral approach to solving the overlapping claims.
"We are entirely entitled to shout at the United States, 'Shut up'. How can meddling by other countries be tolerated in matters that are within the scope of Chinese sovereignty?," said a commentary in the overseas edition of the People's Daily, an offshoot of the ruling Chinese Communist Party's top newspaper.
The main, domestic edition of the newspaper was equally harsh, and accused Washington of seeking to open up divisions between China and its Asian neighbours.

For concessions on Obama pulling out of our Polish Ballistic Missille Defense agreement....we get the Russians stating they will build a Naval Base in Cuba.

Actually, China is just beginning to acquire a Navy that would give them status. The US is still the Big Dog in the Pacific and will be for the foreseeable future. We are a Pacific power and always will be as the Economic Expansion in that area, forces us to be.

Australia, along with the Brits are some of our strongest allies...we have Defense Treaties with them.

Well, until the Chinese can build and maintain 10 Carrier Task Forces, we will still be the Big Dog...and even then, we will have parity to defend the sea lanes against Chinese military coercion.

If you don’t think we are a Pacific power you aren’t keeping up with geopolitical realities and the balance of military power in Asia.
China can only defend itself and make an attempt to take Taiwan, which would likely fail... we would wipe out their Blue Water Navy if they ventured out from their coastline.
We also have the option of beginning to impose tariffs and other restrictions on Chinese imports that we can make here or get elsewhere.
They don't want multilateral talks because they know it will be the US plus everyone else against China.
.They would prefer to bully all their neighbors one on one.

We have high Debt. That is not bankruptcy and far from it as people still want to hold our Debt as a secure financial security relative to other instruments.

I do agree with you that domestic entitlement spending is out of control. That can be handled by returning to a government run on a Constitutional basis.
But we’ve allowed our military to be dragged into a security role supporting international conglomerates, all for the purpose of falsely maintaining global security that only benefits the most wealthy of this world at the expense of American jobs moved overseas and American lives lost in reckless misadventure.
Obliterating pirates and terrorists is a straightforward enterprise, as President Thomas Jefferson demonstrated two hundred years ago. Instead, we arrogantly launched into “nation building”, and are still bogged down in Afghanistan.
