Think of the HBO series Carnivale. If you've seen it, you know what he's talking about. If you haven't, I'm not exactly recommending it, but old-time travelling shows had attractions they didn't let children see.

Or think of another has-been singer, Cher -- "Gypsies, Tramps, and Thieves": "I was born in the wagon of a travelling show/ My momma used to dance for the money they'd throw."

Every few months Sir Elton comes up with things that are pretty ... conservative? stuffy? surprising for a pop entertainer? ... it must be the knighthood, or maybe he just doesn't like Madge, but good for him.
