Reuters Exclusive: U.S. Sweetens Taliban Prisoner Proposal in Bid to Revive Peace Talks

The Obama administration, in a move aimed at reviving Afghan peace talks, has sweetened a proposed deal under which it would transfer Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay prison in exchange for a U.S. soldier held by Taliban allies in Pakistan.

The revised proposal, a concession from an earlier U.S. offer, would alter the sequence of the move of five senior Taliban figures held for years at the U.S. military prison to the Gulf state of Qatar, sources familiar with the issue said.

The revised proposal would send all five Taliban prisoners to Qatar first, said sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. Only then would the Taliban be required to release Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, the only U.S. prisoner of war.

Previously, U.S. officials had proposed dividing the Taliban prisoners into two groups, and requiring Bergdahl's release as a good-faith gesture to come before the second group of prisoners would be moved out of Guantanamo.

Bergdahl, now 26 years old, disappeared from his base in southern Afghanistan in June 2009 and is believed to be being held by Taliban militants in northwestern Pakistan.

Of the five senior Taliban figures, many officials and lawmakers are particularly nervous about transferring Mullah Mohammed Fazl, a "high-risk detainee" who was in the first group sent to Guantanamo in early 2002, under what could be only loose security and travel restrictions.

A former Taliban deputy minister of defense, Fazl is alleged to be responsible for the massacre of thousands of minority Shi'ites.

The group also includes Noorullah Noori, a former top military commander; former deputy intelligence minister Abdul Haq Wasiq; and Khairullah Khairkhwa, a former interior minister.

The identity of the fifth detainee remains unclear.

Obama has no problem bidding against himself, because as long as America loses, Obama wins.

This is just the usual smokescreen same as with any “Peace” talks with Muzzies. Demand tons of gimmies for US or Israel then give nothing back and let talks breakdown. Obama will release all of detaines wholesale after he loses in November anyways.....Lousy Marxist POS that he is!

Inquiring minds would like to know. Did the Taliban demand a round table?

This sounds for all the world like us getting jobbed all over again.

I'm all for it for the sake of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl.

Put them to sleep, 'mark' them and let them go.

If Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl does not come home safe and sound, neutralize them. If he does, neutralize them.

Don't the low-grade moronimbecileidiots in this administration realize how weak this makes us look? When you're begging the other side of the table during negotiations, you need to stand back and take a more realistic look at what's happening.

The Talibunnies know exactly how desperate O is to get us out of Afghanistan so they're going to run the table for all the can. Gawd only knows what kind of secret deals are going on behind the scenes with this bunch of pussies in the WH doing the negotiations.

Here's a proposal for the Tali's: You let our guy go or we'll see just how important your "Sr Commander" and company are worth when we start feeding them each a bullet a day.

I can't believe that 911 was over 10 years ago and these idiots STILL haven't figured out that you have to be strong and aggressive when dealing with Mohammedans.

I agree with the upstream comments. WHAT POW??? I keep a VERY close eye on the news and this is the first that I've heard any such thing. How do we even know that he's even a POW? Is he maybe a turncoat like Hassan and that Lebanon traitor a few years back and the other plants in our military?

If Guantanamo Bay is so bad for terrorists, it should continue to be used.

Implant each and every one of them with a radio controlled cyanide capsule and as soon as we get back the GI, then snuff the vermin.
