Guns, prohibited ammunition, scopes, grenades, bullet proof vests seized from Metchosin home

West Shore RCMP seized a dozen guns and prohibited ammunition from a Metchosin home and a man in his 20s could face criminal charges.

The department’s street crime unit and uniformed officers raided the home Thursday and found firearms, some loaded, improperly stored throughout the house; under a bed, in the kitchen, living room and in a safe that was left unlocked, said West Shore RCMP spokesman Sgt. Max Fossum.

While the eight rifles and four hand guns were registered, some were modified with accessories such as scopes, lights and a tripod which might make them restricted or prohibited weapons, Fossum said. There were gun parts all over the house, evidence that the guns had been modified.

Const. Olen Bernardo, one of the investigators, said some of the guns were modified to look “more menacing” and he doubts any of them were used for hunting purposes.

Investigators also seized dozens of illegal magazines and three bullet proof vests. When police first entered the house, they also found grenades, which almost sparked a call to the RCMP explosives unit, but the grenades had been rendered safe.

“We’re asking the question, why so many guns?” he said.

I don’t know; does the law recognize a legal difference between coherent and incoherent light? And if so, at what level of coherence is the legal distinction made? Sounds like Canadian law treats all lights the same, with respect to attachment to firearms: you can’t do it. (Based on this article, anyway.) Because, the last thing The Law would want, is for someone to be able to do is be sure of his target, and what is behind it, at night.

"Why so many guns?"

I always respond to questions like this as follows:

"Don't worry, I've tried and I can't shoot more than two at a time with any reasonable accuracy"

Wonder what they’d make of my Enfield SMLE No1 MkIII 2a with a nice scope on it? Tack driver, that one. Thanks to Appleseed, using a scope is almost like cheating. Almost.

They may have been upset by a ‘red-dot’ sight, if a scope makes them wee their pants.

Because a gun that looks "more menacing" can't kill a deer.
It's a law of nature. Or something.

“We’re asking the question, why so many guns?” he said.

Twelve? My first thought was "why so few?"

"The fact that the guns were not locked up and that one of the hand guns was loaded is a major concern, Fossum said, because of the risk they could be stolen if the home was broken into."

Uh, if the house was "broken into" that implies that the weapons were already in a locked enclosure (the house). If being in one locked enclosure isn't enough to reassure the hoplophobes, what evidence is there that being in a locked enclosure inside a locked enclosure would do so? If they go into someone's house and find all the guns inside a closed and locked safe, will they be allowed to claim they were stored unsafely because someone could "break into" the safe? That to be safe they should have been inside A THIRD locked enclosure inside the locked enclosure inside the locked enclosure?

There must have been 20 cops on the scene....why so many cops? Katie writes at least two articles a week...why so MUCH freedom of speech? Wouldn't one article a month be more reasonable?

I'm still working on the idea that "mean looking guns can't kill animals." If I figure that one out then I'll try to understand how stolen unloaded guns can't be loaded later by the thief.

I have a feeling the Constable's wife bathes him, dresses him and pins a note to his shirt with directions back home each day.

Nice to know that “looks more menacing”, and scopes, lights, and tripods, are legal considerations for weapons in Canada....
Warning! These laws are Coming to a State near you!

On what pretext did the raid occur? The article says nothing about probabale cause (possibly because it isn't operative in Canukistan).

Maybe the gun owner didn't smile when a policeman went by?

Apparently, there are a lot of Canadian LEOs drinking major amounts of STUPID at the local watering hole. More evidence that certain of our Canadian cousins are nuts. This guy would be considered an amateur hobbyist in IL!
