A Harsh Anti-Romney Ad Sparks Criticism (New! Soptic Chose Not to Insure Wife at Post-Steel Job)
The Wall Street Journal ^ | Wednesday, August 8, 2012 | Peter Nicholas and Colleen McCain Nelson

...played a role in the death of Ilyona Soptic at age 55.

The ad features Joe Soptic, 62, of Missouri, who lost his job when GST Steel of Kansas City—owned by Bain and other investors for eight years—was closed. As melancholy music plays, Mr. Soptic says that when the plant closed, he and his family lost their health-care coverage and "a short time after that, my wife became ill." Her illness was diagnosed five years later. "I don't think Mitt Romney understands what he's done to people's lives by closing the plant," Mr. Soptic says in the ad.

The steel plant was purchased in 1993 and closed in 2001. Mr. Romney departed Bain in 1999 and had no role in the decision to close the plant, his campaign said.

In an interview, Mr. Soptic said he thought the ad was fair. But he also said of Mr. Romney: "I'm not blaming him for her death. I wouldn't do that."

Mr. Soptic said that his wife was receiving health insurance through her employer at the time he lost his job at GST Steel, though she later suffered an injury, left her job and lost her insurance coverage. He could not say precisely when this occurred.

Mr. Soptic said that after he lost his job, he found work as a school custodian about six months later and had the option to put her on his insurance plan. But he opted not to, he said, because he could not afford the more than $350 monthly premium on the $25,000 salary he was making, on top of paying his mortgage and a daughter's college tuition. Ilyona Soptic was diagnosed with cancer in 2006 and died that year.

Can you imagine what his daughter thinks now of her college education?

The danger in all of this is that the focus is going to become Soptic. Yeah, he’s a POS, but not THE POS. That title goes to Obama, and we are starting to lose focus on that.

I don’t know...are we?

A party that would put out such an ad, wow...just wow.

The party needs to be taken down and revealed for the snake oil salesman they are.

Insurance for a college-age student could be bought for very few dollars directly from the university. So the guy is misleading us that by telling us that was one of his main excuses.

I wonder how the daughter feels, knowing one of the reasons her mother died was her dad was paying for her college tuition and not buying her mom the health insurance she needed? Way to go dad!

How incompetent are Obama’s people that they ran the ad in the first place? Or are they so arrogant that they think this will fly?

*****

Both! And the total disconnect from reality of Obama’s ‘team’ is what really makes me feel terror! I believe that the same level of “competence” has been happening in every office in the White House.

My brother became disabled and is unable to work. The government gives him his health insurance through Medicaid. It would seems this woman could have gotten this insurance?

Hammer meets nail.

Thanks to Harry Reid and Joe Soptic, the news cycle for the past week has bypassed the failure known as the Obama Economy.

It's going to be like this until November.

Just imagine how many guys are going to lose their wives after losing their jobs at Solyndra!

Yeah, but it won't be Barry's fault because evil Rethuglicans intentionally refused to purchase their wonderful green energy solar products as part of a dastardly plot to obstruct Barry's wonderful "transformation" of American, thus making the company go bankrupt and thereby killing their beautiful wives.

You clearly need lessons on how to discern evil Rethuglican ways.

I heard yesterday on some commentary on the radio that guy Soptic is the same person talking in an Obama ad before, so, the connection between his excellency’s campaign and the super pac is set in stone right there.

You are on to something but unfortunately by the time that all gets sorted out, all the campaign will have to do is pay some kind of fine. Frankly, when such a prima facia case is brought, there should be something in the law that removes all political ads from the air for a specific period, from both campaign and PAC, say ten days and the requirement they then run a week of apologies for violating the spirit of the law and fairness in elections. Ever happen, well, no never.

It was 0 who pulled the last resort breast cancer drug off the market....to expensive to use.

But Myth’s stupid answer ‘if she’d lived in Mass, she’d of had ROMNEYCARE’ shows you how far his socialized medicine thoughts go, there will be NO REPEAL of 0’care of which Myth is the godfather if he is elected.

Some cancer’s are caught to late and no amount of chemo will help. No amount of medical treatment will help cure it. You can only treat the pain and side effects.

Just lost the youngest of my last 2 living aunts to it last month, and she had the best cancer treatment insurance can buy.

Even with all the advances in treatment and such, cancer can become so invasive it cannot be stopped.

We all make choices and we all have to live with the consequences. The difference is that many of us don’t choose to blame others.

What was wrong with the kid not getting a job to pay for college?

I will not be voting for Myth as he does not meet Bible, Constitutional standards or have the Conservative record to support my vote.

But to lay this on him is stupid. Cancer is no respecter of persons or age. It also depends on what type it is. Some are incurable. Some are caught to late. Some times the chemo weakens the body so much a secondary infection kills the person, not the cancer.

“But he opted not to, he said, because he could not afford the more than $350 monthly premium on the $25,000 salary he was making, on top of paying his mortgage and a daughter’s college tuition.”

This tells me that he lost his job in his 50’s and had not done a lick of financial planning his entire life. He still had a mortgage, chose not to invest (plan ahead) for his daughter’s educational needs and had no emergency fund!

To be more plain, he is average in America and that means he is a loser. As a result he is advocating that the Federal Government continue to make policies that cater to the lowest common denomonitor of our society, lowering the bar further.

This guy deserves a public flogging!

“If I was his daughter, I would not have accepted tuition money if it meant my mom went without insurance!”

He probably didn’t even tell his daughter. His own statements tell us that he was not paying any attention to his own finances, so he wasn’t even smart enough to let his daughter know!

He is a loser and a moron who deserves a public flogging to be broadcast 24/7!

A wealthy friend of mine this very year saw his wife diagnosed with cancer on Friday and she died the following Wednesday. Symptoms: not many, just some coughing for a few days before seeing a doctor. In reality, she was totally eat up with cancer...no amount of anything could have made a difference in her case.

This is all a pile of bovine excrement trying to dump on a political candidate for things he had no connection to...

Usually, you have the option to buy insurance each year. Even if he turned down the insurance for his wife the first few years, he could have purchased it after she lost her insurance.

Soptic just admitted that he alone murdered his wife by not allowing her to use her own insurance she had because of other expenses instead of paying the copays.
