Mitt Romney seems to have reflexively winced with embarrassment at the questions about his perfectly logical finance and tax decisions. Understandable. Of course, the subject of his wealth precedes not-so-veiled attacks coming from an unfriendly press corps and a vicious opponent who will use any means to paint him as a real-life Gordon Gekko.
But he is missing a fantastic opportunity.
"Yes, I have many offshore accounts. Yes, I take advantage of legal deductions and tax incentives in compliance with the tax code. I am a wealthy, successful man who didn't get that way by being a fool. Furthermore, one of the main reasons I am seeking the presidency is to change the disgraceful tax laws that force someone like me to go through the time, money, and effort to protect oneself from the arbitrary and bewildering maze of confiscatory taxation."
When people on the left decry the "unfairness" of federal tax laws, they are in the right -- but not in the way they intend. They mean that it is unfair in a vague way for the rich to have so much money. They want the rich to be punished. Facts about the rates and amounts of tax paid by the wealthy are of no interest to these people. But the system is unfair. For what is fair about a system that confiscates your earnings at arbitrary and changing rates, giving privileges and breaks to people based on who they are, how much they earn, and what kind of behavior they exhibit? It is fundamentally unfair.
And, to make things worse, with full force of law, the government requires its intimidated citizens to complete forms that a professor at MIT would find bewildering.

Wasn’t Ted Kennedy one that helped start the overseas banking tax avoidance?
Of course. Laws—at least here in the Fruited Plain—are written by the wealthy and for the wealthy. There was a big flap about something called “Critical Legal Studies” back in the late-80s, because it was based on this premise. But it’s not like you have to be a legal scholar to realize this.

Anybody remember Herman Cain’s 9-9-9 plan?
The Dems (and their minions in the media) will be judged for their attempts to stir up class envy. Envy is a sin according to scripture, and the one who worked specifically to cause another to sin is also guilty.

Thing is, Romney has not indicated that this is even on his radar. He isn’t planning to change anything about the IRS code.
When it was learned that Mitt paid only 15% tax, instead of being embarrassed , he should have said: “ I worked very hard to get my taxes down to 15% and I will work equally hard to get yours down to 15% too.” Unfortunately this is not something he believes. To him others should pay higher rates because we are not deserving.

I don’t think that is Romney’s belief on this. He, like all good career politicians, understands that the expanse of the US Treasury is the prize in an election. Controlling trillions and trillions of dollars is the goal.
Now, being able to spend it in myriad ways while couching that spending in some palatable way is accomplished by a labrynthian IRS code; smoke and mirrors for the average voter.
Additionally, simplifying or streamlining the tax code would also simplify and streamline the monetary flow from tax-payer to the “books” of the US Treasury.
In my estimation, it is all about keeping the tax-payer confused on how tax money is paid to the gummint and conversely confused on how the money is being spent. All the while, controlling trillions and trillions of dollars.
