In an election year filled with secret campaign money, the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company has made the unlikely choice to go public with a big political donation.
The Ohio-based company, familiar as the producer of a ubiquitous plant fertilizer, is now a political player, donating $200,000 in June to the Restore Our Future super PAC supporting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Miracle-Gro's donation to Obama-lite buys no sympathy with me. Consumer products companies are typically leftist, and Miracle-Gro takes corporate leftist nannyism to a new level. They've just decided 4 more years of the Marxist regime is too much suffering for their business.

I didn’t say I supported Scott’s. I said Miracle-Gro is a good product.
The fact is, I DO support them in this donation. I do NOT support their busybody meddling with smokers.
If I had a company and hired smokers, I would hire them at a lower dollar rate than non-smokers. From what I see throughout towns and cities are smokers constantly stepping out of buildings to smoke....and more than the time ‘breaks’ are given.
Off the top of my head, I do not have one. However it was widely discussed here on FR at the time it came about - which was probably about 4-5 years ago.
If you allowed them to smoke at their desk, that problem would not exist.
Years ago I worked or a lawyer, who was a former smoker. He refused to implement a no-smoking in the office policy because the smokers were always more productive than the non-smokers, who tended to take lots of breaks and were constantly whining. At one point he was the only non-smoker in the office.
Personally, I actually not only support their donation, but also so their busybody meddling -I just don’t support the company because of the busybody meddling.
And I never particularly cared for their products, even before they became busybodies. I can make better in my own kitchen without toxic ingredients.
P.S.....I am not ‘so thrilled’....and I necessarily don’t boycott a company based solely on political contributions. Many peeps in business give to both parties to stay neutral. Now if they bashed conservatives, that’s another story!

The Democrat fertilizer of which you speak is primarily a soil conditioner and only limited quantities of fertilizers.
I really don’t care about political contributions. having been in a position for many years where my input was needed for political contribution decisions, I understand the hows and whys businesses make them.
My personal “boycotts” on businesses are determined by their policies and positions that affect my business and personal decisions and policies.
This company fires employees for engaging in legal activities on their own time. Do you actually agree with that?
As a matter of fact, yes, I do. And it’s not because Scott threw money Romney’s way rather than Obama’s. It’s because private companies, less and less perhaps, have or at least should have the right to hire & fire whom they choose. And, by the way, what’s the definition of “legal activities” these days? Right now, pedophilia’s one or two law suits shy of “legal.” And, believe me, as a 3-pack-a-dayer, I’m not equating pedophilia with smoking.
It seems to me that THE COURTS, certain legislative bodies, and, oh yeah, our chief executive are the problem, not the whims of private corporations.
OK - so I was off by a year or 2. As far as I know the policy has not been changed and it is being embraced by more and more companies.
As I said, I support their right to hire anyone they choose based on any criteria they choose - I just have to question the business sense of a company that immediately writes off between 20 and 25% of the workforce because they have fallen for the lies of the anti smoker industry.
I also agree with it - but will not give them my business because I personally do not think it is the business of any business what I do on my own time as long as I am not breaking the law.
My problem with them is they support forcing other businesses to have similar policies and support legislative moves to keep me from allowing my employees to smoke while working. I don’t care what their employee policies are - I only care they are trying to dictate my employee policies.

I understand what you are saying, and agree with you.
However, I will defend them in their policy only because I don’t want any more government interference with how a business conducts its business. But that is where I part ways with any support for this company - they support government interference into how other businesses conduct their business.
Alas - there are many FReepers who also support government interference with how businesses conduct their business and choose their clientele.
