Skip to comments.New Romney ad slams Obama over Soptic attack; Update: “Real buy … swing states”

It didnt take long for Team Romney to go on offense over the despicable attack ad from Priorities USA Action that strongly implied that Mitt Romney was responsible for the death of a spouse laid off by GST several years before her diagnosis, and long after Romney left Bain Capitals active management. Today the Romney campaign released a new TV-ready ad that attacks Barack Obama for scraping bottom and asks, What does it say about a presidents character that tries to use the tragedy of a womans death for political gain?
The ad title is America Deserves Better, but it could be just as easily called The Death of Hope and Change:

It didn’t take long for Team Romney to go on offense over the despicable attack ad from Priorities USA Action that strongly implied that Mitt Romney was responsible for the death of a spouse laid off by GST — several years before her diagnosis, and long after Romney left Bain Capital’s active management. Today the Romney campaign released a new TV-ready ad that attacks Barack Obama for “scraping bottom” and asks, “What does it say about a president’s character that tries to use the tragedy of a woman’s death for political gain?”
The ad title is “America Deserves Better,” but it could be just as easily called “The Death of Hope and Change”:
There is actually another question asked in this ad: “What does it say about a presidents character when he had his campaign raise money for the ad then stood by as his top aides were caught lying about it?” Obama campaign spokesperson Stephanie Cutter, who tried claiming that she didn’t have any knowledge of Soptic’s details even though she had hosted a conference call introducing him to the media, has canceled an appearance this weekend on ABC’s This Week. So far she’s still working for the campaign, and even today, the White House and Barack Obama have refused to criticize the super-PAC ad, or the former Obama aides Bill Burton and Sean Sweeney who ran it. Mark Knoller reported on Twitter that Jay Carney still won’t talk about the ad:
Carney remains unwilling to offer WH comment on pro-Obama PAC ad attempting to link Romney to death of steelworker’s wife.

Meanwhile, BuzzFeed reported a few minutes ago that Romney had an opportunity to run a similar ad against Mike Huckabee in 2008 — and vetoed it:
And while Romney has run his share of misleading commercials, to the bookThe Real Romney the candidate himself vetoed a negative ad that linked one of his primary opponents in 2008 to the death of a woman, seeing it as “desperate.”
It was October 2007 and Mike Huckabee was on the rise in Iowa, threatening Romney’s chances to win the state’s caucuses in January. Alex Castellanos, then the chief strategist for Romney’s campaign, suggested a harsh attack ad based on a a detail turned up in opposition research: Mike Huckabee had paroled a convicted rapist who, after his release, raped and murder a woman in 2003. …
Some in Romney’s circle feared the ad would backfire on them, and the final decision to run the ad was left to Romney himself. Romney thought the ad seemed “desperate” and “created sympathy for Huckabee.” In the end, Romney killed the ad.
In December, when Huckabee’s surge was finally realized, Romney ran a softer ad hitting Huckabee for paroling criminals, without mentioning the death of the woman post-parole.
My father likes to say, “Class will tell.” It certainly has in this case.
Update: A source close to the campaign tells me that this ad will be a “real buy” in swing states.
Obama has character? Seems like this is the first time ANYBODY on the Romney side has tried to define whatever character Barack Hussein Obama.
They may have tapped into a real gold mine here. There are a lot more facets to the Obama character that DEMAND to be exposed.
If only the Establishment Republicans would pick up on this thread.
But then, pigs could fly, too.
Good! It is a very good ad. And I hear Rasmussen has Mitt up +2 in Iowa.
I’ll tell you what it says about his character.
It says that he is a maggot attempting to feed off of the dead flesh of this unfortunate woman.
It is a good start.
Now, continue to define his character. Inform the public of his communist background. His failure as a student in college-I.E. he got into Harvard with failing grades. Until he proves he did not have failing grades, keep insisting he got into these schools by lying.
Romney’s counter punch hitting obama alot harder than obama’s jab hit romney
Haven’t seen either ad in TX.
The Romney campaign still believes in the MSM myth that even though we may disagree with this President, we generally like the man personally. So they think they dont want to attack him on a personal level, just like McCain.
Let the record show, not only do I disagree with his policies, I think consider the man low on character. He reminds me of my worse employees. Hes incompetent, yet hes always pointing fingers in the other direction when he makes mistakes.
Hes a man of LOW character.
I love the fact that Cutter cancelled w ABC Sunday!
It’s a clear admission of guilt!
Like McCain, they are afraid to be accused of being racial.
They do that, and Romney loses. They attack his character and they win...BIG.
They can not let the MSM define the campaign. Let the MSM explain why character is racial.

If the Romney campaign had real brains, they’d announce Col Allen West as Romney’s running mate and let West throw the heavy punches at Obama...He’s my choice for BEST chance to WIN!
This would have been a boffo ad three or four decades ago when Americans still cared whether or not their leaders were scraping rock-bottom.
America ceased to care about the President’s character when they allowed Slick Willie to dig in his heels and ride out impeachment.
a real buy in swing states.
Doubtful you will. I am in the DFW area and have seen only two Obama ads so far. Being a deep, very deep, red state we most likely won't see many national ads at all, why waste the money.
With Moocheele getting knuckleheads registered: on black radio interview, this ad must be used and other tougher hitting on Bama’s personal ideology or Mitt is dead meat. The RNC elites think Bama is just another Dem. Wrong. He is the most Stalinist guy we have ever seen in American politics. Time to to bring out all the big guns and whale away. This election is not about who is the nicest guy but who can convince Americans which path and ideology is right for America.
