The UN has called for an immediate suspension of government-mandated US ethanol production, adding to pressure on Barack Obama to address the food-versus-fuel debate in the run-up to presidential elections...

Wow, for once I agree with the UN... except the ethanol mandate needs to be repealed altogether.

Corn and wheat prices are in the stratosphere, and that affects the UN’s ability to give away things to third-world nations. This is purely self-serving and in no way is intended to better our situation except as a temporary palliative.
Given that Obama’s the globalist moron that he is, he’ll take his cues and do this, cutting the price of gas down temporarily for his election bid.

Sooner or later the UN had to get one thing right. Yesterday our Minister of Ag was saying that the corn prices would have little effect on consumer prices. He was of course lying.

Liberalism is a mental disorder!
Hey! Let's use our food supply for fuel instead of all that bad oil!

Exactly - the old EPA trick of leaving the mandate in place even though it’s not possible to meet it...
Guess which direction this will drive motor fuel prices...

Repeal the mandate? How about passing a law making it illegal to use food crops to manufacture ethanol?

No New Laws!
If I want to use vegetable oil to run the family truckster that should be fine.
Just don’t mandate it.
Let the market work.

Yes, now, where to put it....hmmmm, how about the Maldives, and then we drive the heck out of our SUV’s and make sea levels rise and.........problem solved.
With the elimination of ethanol, this should accelerate the CO2 problem causing (Smurf Apocalyptic Photo) havoc on the Maldives.....and that new airport they suckered investors into even though their convinced the nation is going under....irony, I just love it.

Ethanol plants here in Indiana are shutting down faster than K-marts in the 1990s.
I’m assuming as the price of corn skyrockets, sugar ethanol from Brazil is undercutting the price?
To: Sloth
There's just something wrong about having the production of fuel competing with the production of bourbon.

The UN, wrong again! (for that matter, NPR, wrong again!) When the UN gets around to condemning OPEC for keeping the price of crude so high, instead of civilized countries which burn it -- ever wonder who finances the anti-carbon sh*t?!? -- I'll be pretty impressed. The price of corn rises and falls due to A) the price of petroleum (impact on diesel, gasoline, various ag chemicals) and B) the weather. We've been enjoying our first real rain of the summer, it's amazing the crops haven't burned up, but yield will probably be lower, even if the rain keeps up.

We have a gas station near us that sells ethanol free gas. It costs a little more, but it’s worth it.

It isn’t that you agree with them - it is that they have come around to the sensible answer that free market conservatives have supported all along.

The UN needs to simply FOaD.
We do need to stop the idiocy of corn cobbing our food market for “bio fuels”, but the food should be for our own.
