JANESVILLE, Wis. (AP) — Even before Wisconsin sent Paul Ryan to Congress, he was meticulously carving a path that seemed to point only upward.

As a young Capitol Hill staffer, he impressed Republican lawmakers with his hustle and intellectual curiosity. He blended quickly with an elite crop of conservative thinkers. By his 30s, he was a congressman on his way to becoming a GOP name brand with his push-the-edge budget proposals.

Ryan’s climb reached new heights Saturday when Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney announced him as his running mate.

Romney remains Romney, but this is seen by me as a step in the right direction.

At least Romney didn’t pick Pawlenty, Saintorum, Rice or Bush.....color me surprised.

Anybody with a modicum of education and experience can write a ‘plan’. And such persons can even suggest tantalizing solutions like killing a cancer in a petri dish only to find it ineffective in the human body.

A plan without practical, step-by-step, actions that are executable in the here and now is not a plan. The D-Day Landings were planned. Ryan's budget "plan" is a dream or at best a vision. And that "plan" will be mined for ammunition to use against the Romney campaign. The thing with political plans is they always take something from someone to hand over to someone else. That is why it is never wise to get too specific (i.e. burn too many bridges) if you want to run for higher office. The moment Ryan came out with his "plan", it was clear that if he had just given his potential opponents a treasure trove of ammunition to use against him. In politics, when figuring out winners and losers (i.e. making plans), it is generally wise to hold your fire until you see the whites of your adversaries' eyes (i.e. wait until you're elected), especially when the majority of the people negatively affected will come from a demographic that has tended, historically, to vote for your party.

The problem with bridges to conservatism is that republicans have a nasty habit of burning them once in power until they get their teeth kicked in by the liberal left that they cozy up to in the name of bi-partisanship. Then, they start bringing out the rickety worm wood to re-build the bridge.

Is that Romney's sole reason for picking Ryan? It appears to have been McCain's sole reason for picking Palin. How Romneys' campaign acts towards Ryan will tell us a lot, just as did McCain's campaign.

Let’s recap shall we?: Rock ribbed conservatives Mark Levin and Sarah Palin (“anyone but Obama … we have got to replace Barack Obama and his socialist policies in November”) are on board with the Romney/Ryan ticket.

I am hopeful.

The vice presidency is often a spring board to a presidential nomination. If Romney wins in November, we could have a solid conservative running for president in 8 years.

The liberal/Marxist/progressive/fascist/ collectivist left didn't get this far all at once. They did it over time. Conservatives should strive for constant improvement as well and Romney/Ryan is an improvement over Obama. In 8 years Ryan would be a serious improvement.

Sometimes but they're not all that successful. Nixon failed (the first time), Mondale failed. Gore failed.

Bush 41 was an exception and survived just one term and Nixon didn't finish his second one.

Only 14 VPs have become president, with only 5 elected to that position and Adams, Jefferson and Van Buren were a long time ago.

I like Ryan. But he is a part of the establishment. He is a go along to get along guy and won’t rock the boat. And VP’s don’t anyway so this is no big deal. Mitt is still just ABO. Big WOOP!

Sadly you are correct. The VP position has no power other than what the Prez allows. It is primarily a ceremonial position. Picking Ryan was good but it will not "bridge" the gap with the conservative base. The base is not that stupid. And yes, Ryan is a 'go-along to get-along' politician. He won't go against the one who brings him to the dance.
