New York (CNN) -- Helen Gurley Brown, who created the idea of a modern woman with her book "Sex and the Single Girl" and was editor in chief of Cosmopolitan magazine for three decades, has died at age 90, the Hearst Corporation said Monday. Gurley Brown died Monday morning at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia after a brief hospitalization, the publisher said. "Helen was one of the world's most recognized magazine editors and book authors, and a true pioneer for women in journalism -- and beyond," Hearst Chief Executive Frank Bennack said. It was Gurley Brown who invented today's notion of a modern woman -- one who could have both a successful career and an exciting, satisfying sex life, said Bonnie Fuller, the influential magazine editor who took over at Cosmopolitan when Gurley Brown stepped down in 1997. "Young women today don't realize the legacy that they owe her," Fuller said in an interview with CNN. Gurley Brown's 1962 book "Sex and the Single Girl" encouraged young women to enjoy being single, find fulfillment in work and non-marital relationships with men, and take pleasure in sex, Hearst said. The book was on the bestseller lists for more than a year and became a movie starring Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis, Lauren Bacall, and Henry Fonda.

She may now be in a place of torment.
“And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.”
(Luke 16:23)

“For I have 5 brethren, that he may testify unto them,
lest they also come to this place of torment.” (Luke 16:28)

Jesus said: “Remember Lot’s wife.” (Luke 17:32)

Having seen her latest boyfriend buying roses, Helen cried, "Damn, I hadn't planned on spending the evening with my legs in the air!" And her blond assistant said, "Don't you have a vase?" "Turning 80 shouldn't slow you down, ladies. One word: Poli-Grip." Helen Girlie Brown

All her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren must be in deep mourning.

I take it you're being ironic. I have always assumed that Ms. Brown aborted every child she ever conceived - if that stone cold womb was even capable of conceiving.

Every article I've seen about her death makes no mention of children. No nieces, nephews nor any other survivors are mentioned. I guess our feminist journalists want to avoid leaving the impression that their feminist hero[ine] likely died lonely and un-loved.

And the "great work" of her life? --you're right, it will be forgotten, except perhaps as a trashy symbol of the decay of American cultural mores.

O tempora! O mores!

Sooner or later, somebody was going to repackage the whole Playboy thing for women. She got there first.

FWIW: do a google search for "cosmopolitan magazine." Every cover of the magazine, has the word "sex" on it.

You’re welcome. I guess I was ruined at an early age by watching old movies where men were gentlemen and proud to be called such a thing. These days to call a male a ‘gentleman’ evokes laughter and ridicule as if that’s an outdated notion.

There’s nothing in the world like being courted by a true gentleman.

A bit of trivia—

Helen Gurley Brown’s father, Arkansas State Senator Ira Gurley, died in an elevator accident in the capitol building in Little Rock. Helen and her family moved to California shortly therafter. Had it not been for a freak accident, HGB may have never been the Cosmo girl.

Try finding a guy under 40 who will help you on with your coat or hold a door open for you...and good luck

Believe me, if a man (especially in the workplace) displayed chivalry, he will sooner rather than later face charges of from the Human Resources Department.

If you think I am joking, I am not.

Men have been conditioned to lose their chivalry through] the demonic Democrat tools such as "the lawsuit", "the complaint", "the counseling session", and "the diversity training."

I think Johnny Pesky’s passing is much more significant
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Today?
From the era where a man virtually spent his entire career with 1 team...

Remember when Jackie Robinson was traded to the Giants and he just decided to retire?

Was Pesky on the Red Sox with Pee Wee Reese?

It is not just the men!!!

I am well beyond 40 and still hold doors for whomever may be directly behind me or trying to come in.

Held the door for some woman few years ago and she kind of ‘bumped’ me and snarled “You don’t have to hold the f’n door for me because I am a lady”.
I replied “No one said you were a lady, I held it because I am a Gentleman”.

And she was ‘old’ enough to know the custom.

Heh.. Whenever I have a similar encounter with someone who is needlessly rude I try to push out a loud fart, or at least belch. If I got no gas handy (a rare thing at my age), I just work up a loud snot hocker and spit it on the ground - - especially funny if the person is walking away. ...Whatever I can do to show my respect.

Heck, Cosmopolitan featured much better looking barebreasted photos than Playboy! Hefner only cared about size, while Cosmo at least showed pix of the `ideal woman’ whose shape and naked image was so perfect that she seemed like any guy’s dream date.

Of course, Cosmo’s female readership only felt inadequacy & inferiority seeing these naked goddesses, and their only salvation from loneliness was to go on subscribing to the only magazine that promised them sex & fulfillment through twenty ways to please a man.

Oh well, “sic transit gloria mundi”. Today’s Cosmo Girl is out to prove she can be just as raunchy & crude as some guys, and with the amorality of a herd of alley cats.

Think I have a couple (well a few) years on you and will give you two ‘warnings’...

Afternoon naps are addictive.
Watch those ‘wet ones’ of course, wet enough, and you have an opportunity to get that ‘warm fuzzy feeling’ of your youth back.
Along the same line can’t wear light colored trousers and better not go Commando....

Like the man (Rush??) says “A baby at his 1st birthday and a man at his 90th are not much different. They have no idea where they are, who is there with them or what is going on. And probably both need a change of skivvys.

I think she was fundamentally bad. She thought the value of being female was sexual and that was about it, because that was all she was capable of, I guess.

I first read Cosmo in the mid 1980s, and it had some advice for women in their 20s about being respected in the workplace, as well as the sexy stuff. Within a few years, it dropped any pretense of peddling female dignity and competence, and just went for the smut. The decision was made that you sell more makeup ads and such if you just go for the sexual focus. And HGB was ready to that because it was all she knew about anyway.

She helped the culture decline and the quality of women’s lives decline accordingly.

I kind of doubt that she is singing with the angels.

The destruction of decent women leads to the destruction of decent men.

If a slug who lives in his parent’s basement can still get laid, where’s the incentive to do any better than “live in his parent’s basement”?

“The book was on the bestseller lists for more than a year and became a movie starring Natalie Wood, Tony Curtis, Lauren Bacall, and Henry Fonda.”

That movie’s pretty funny. Henry Fonda and Lauren Bacall were the funniest as an older/”Ropers”-style man and wife.

And from what I heard, bore almost no resemblance to the book of the same title. Sadly, it’s probably the only thing from Mrs. Brown’s life I can appreciate.
