Topple Assad to prevent Syria breaking up -- Jumblatt

Foreign states must do more to help Syrian rebels defeat President Bashar al-Assad and spare the country an "endless civil war" and possible partition, a leading politician in neighboring Lebanon said on Tuesday.

Walid Jumblatt said the battle for Syria hinged on foreign backing to the rebels, who he believes can "easily" expel Assad from Damascus if the necessary weapons are supplied to their forces in the south, not far from the capital. He said the failure to provide such weapons was hypocritical and "fishy".

"The more you accelerate the downfall, the more you save Syria from a possible partition," Jumblatt, head of Lebanon's most influential Druze family, said in an interview at Mukhtara, his family mansion in the mountains south of Beirut.

Asked what such a break-up would entail, he said: "It would look like an endless civil war in Syria."

Jumblatt is the latest regional leader to raise the specter of civil war leading to the division of Syria along ethnic and sectarian lines that could separate the Alawite minority to which Assad belongs from a mainly Sunni population, while creating new boundaries between Syrian Kurds and Arabs.

I wonder if Israel is secretly helping Assad. I would rather know who my enemy is than not know who my enemy is.

Having the Bruthas in Egypt and soon to be Syria only means that they will freely move into Lebanon then we can expect Jordan to fall.

And with Iran covering all of them with a nuclear umbrella and the UN acting as the propaganda arm.

Yeah, nothing to see here folks. Moveon... Moveon

All’s this means is that the always plotting Jumblatt feels secure (for today) in the agreements and arrangements that he thinks he’s already made with the Saudi-Wahabis and the MB - the soon to be future power centers in control in Syria.

I would like to see Syria broken up so that the Kurds could have a homeland.

Jumblatt is the ultimate surviver. He puts his finger in the wind and goes with the winner every time. He will back anyone who he feels keeps him alive. So far for 40 years he has played this game to perfection, attested by the fact he is still above ground.

and in the process many of the deals he has made that have kept him alive and thriving have amounted to treacherous and deadly deals with regard to the lives of others - he will back stab anyone if he needs to

as I learned from a Lebanese friend of mine who fought in the civil wars (plural) in Lebanon

Not if the Turks can help it. The formation of Kurdistan would invite a Turkish invasion.

The Turks are already reconciling themselves to it; the PKK hasn’t exactly helped its own cause though, they really need to make nice to make the political solution possible for Erdogan. They won’t, of course. The main military / atrocity threat will be when the Assad dictatorship falls; if succeeded by a single gov’t, they’ll invade Syrian Kurdistan (which is a defacto state right now).

Thanks EQAndyBuzz. Israel’s main concern is Jordan. As long as Jordan’s monarchy remains in power — and the crap going on just over the border is enough to discourage any kind of armed uprising among Jordanians, including the non-Hashemite Arabs — Israel can deal with its enemies piecemeal. If Jordan looks like it’s going to fall, Israel will make a preemptive [sic — the Hizzies have been in a continuous state of war against Israel for over 20 years) move against Hizbollah. When they’re done, there won’t be a Hizbollah.
