Shooting spurs heated debate on gay rights, 'hate group' label
The Hill ^ | Aug 15 2012 | Jordy Yager

The shooting of a security guard Wednesday at the Family Research Council (FRC) has spurred a torrent of heated accusations from both sides of the gay rights debate about claims that the conservative organization is a “hate group.”

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), one of the nation’s leading opponents of same-sex marriage, told The Hill the shooting was a direct result of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s decision in 2010 to place the FRC on its list of hate groups for its rhetoric on gays....

...The Family Research Council and a contingent of conservative lawmakers, including then-Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) and then-Minority Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.), asked the Southern Poverty Law Center for a debate on the hate group designation, which it declined to hold.

The SPLC said it looked at specific comments that members of the FRC have made about gay people when it labeled it a “hate group.”

One such comment was taken from the FRC’s website, in an extensive paper the group wrote attempting to link a homosexual lifestyle with pedophilia — a connection that the group’s leaders have repeatedly made.

“Despite efforts by homosexual activists to distance the gay lifestyle from pedophilia, there remains a disturbing connection between the two,” the FRC wrote.

The SPLC is a joke of an organization to label anyone else as “haters” Their agenda is obvious, in their sick minds only Whites, Christians, and conservatives can be “haters”

Pandering fools who can’t get jobs in the real world who need money handed to them in order to function. Just another case of non-producers.

Southern Poverty Law Center’s hate speech rhetoric falsely accusing the Family Research Council, solicited the shooter to perform the criminal attack on the Center.

Agreed, and I have wondered for the past 2 years why SPLC was not sued for libel.

Geez—I don’t recall any of the Chic-fil_A group shooting up any of the lgbt groups. Who are the REAL haters of traditional marriage and values?

I would charge the SPLC with inciting this moron to attempt to shoot up the FRC using hate speech of their own (arbitrarily naming organizations as “hate” groups simply for holding an opposing point of view).

Fully agreed.

The question is, WHY have so many Christian and pro-traditional marriage groups put up with this libelous, slanderous treatment for so long??? Is this going to finally be the turning point?

Just checked CNN site again. They still have not reported what the shooter said or what was in his backpack (CFA flyers, etc.).

Bingo. Wake up New York Times. Wake up Washington Post. Ask the 'Poverty Center' for a list of exactly ALL their 'hate groups'. Vet them. Find out if the stories they tell in the dark - stories that have Social Security Offices arming themselves - ask if those stories are true. How many people. How violent. What REAL proof. What have they done. Facts. Not what do they think. What have they done. For God's sake do this - vet the monsters.

Now would be a great time to do it.

‘WHY have so many Christian and pro-traditional marriage groups put up with this libelous, slanderous treatment for so long?’

What do you propose they do about it? Mud wrestle in the courts? What would that accomplish?
That overworked allegation of “hate” is so passe, so pointless, so unconvincing, other than as evidence of intellectual vacuity on the part of the true haters.

I guess you’re right; it speaks for itself. I just cannot imagine allowing anyone to label my own group as that without wanting to attack in a litigious manner. But you’re probably right, just let it stand and speak for itself.
