Both Romney and Ryan, to be charitable, have had less than sterling immigration records but do seem to be waking up and smelling the tea. However, I think conservatives will have to be prepared to take these guys on after they are elected to make sure their backbones stay intact when it comes to immigration. I like the way the article ends: "The Republican base," he said, "simply won't put up with any more George Bushes."

Then elect Obama so all of Central and South America get in on our elections, food stamp, and welfare programs!

Let's face it - you are never going to see a GOP presidential or vice-presidential nominee who is truly, actually, effectively opposed to illegal immigration. It simply will not be allowed by the party establishment, since the GOP-E has too much invested in "Hispanic outreach" and big bucks from businesses that want cheap, exploitable labour.

Because we weren’t successful getting a solid conservative nominated. So we have to deal with what we have.

No thanks.

“The first rule of driving is “FRIST, GET THROUGH THE INTERSECTION! Then worry about which lane you’re in”!”

If you want to look no further than November, fine. I’m not overlooking November but am also looking beyond. That’s one of the reasons we will need as many conservatives in the Senate and House as possible. We don’t want a congress going along with a president just because he’s got an R after his name (like the Republican congress did with Bush).

THe Hill, like Politico, is doing all they can to “help” Republicans and Conservatives unite. I am so glad The Hill always provide these wedge articles which seek only to “help” Republicans. Funny though, they never write such articles seeking to “help” Democrats like this. Huh, that’s funny.

Roy Beck, president of Numbers USA, which advocates for tougher immigration laws, said this week that Ryan's overall record on immigration-related bills “is a rogue's list of pro-amnesty [positions].”
“If you want somebody who's pro-amnesty and pro-immigration, he's in the top 10 percent of Republicans,” Beck said in a phone interview Tuesday, noting Ryan's past support for George W. Bush's immigration overhaul, measures to legalize illegal-immigrant farm workers and others allowing illegal immigrant students to receive in-state tuition benefits.
Beck was quick to highlight Ryan's 2010 vote against the DREAM Act, as well as Ryan's website message vowing “not [to] support amnesty for the millions of illegal immigrants already living in the United States.”
“As bad as he's been in the past, he's been improving,” Beck said.

If both pro-amnesty and anti-immigration groups are complaining about Ryan’s record on immigration, that probably means that he is lukewarm on the issue and will go where the public leads him. Frankly, as the article states, Ryan wasn’t selected as Romney’s VP based on his immigration position. As important as it may be for many, this election won’t be won or lost on that issue and, as VP, Paul Ryan won’t be the guy who signs any future immigration bills so his position on immigration, while worth noting, is not going to be of paramount importance to many independent voters.

Is that any relation to we have to pass it to find out what's in it?

Don't ever trust a single word coming out of Romney's or Pelosi's mouth.

You may be right about that. Or not.

You are right that the establishment hacks and their Chamber of Commerce buddies want endless supplies of third-world labor to drive down loabor costs at the expense of the American worker, the cultural rot and societal ills be damned.

But enough heat has been brought to bear on these guys that, while they may still prefer open borders, they know that a Bush/McCain type approach to immigration will now make them political roadkill. That’s why we saw Romney, who I understand formerly had no problem with sanctuary cities, take a moderately hard approach in the primaries.

But you have to keep the heat on these kinds of guys after the elections are over, as you well know.

I agree that The Hill is not likely to come to the assistance of Republicans. However, the main thrust of the article is correct in showing some shift in Ryan’s immigration positions while admitting there are still questions. Ryan certainly hasn’t defined himself as explicitly on immigration as he has on budgetary and spending matters.

Good points. I think Ryan probably is lukewarm to immigration issues. And “will go where the public leads him” is my point in posting this article. We have to be prepared to “lead” (probably “push”) Romeny and Ryan on immigration if they are elected.

And while I agree that debt and spending are the issues of most concern right now, as others have pointed out on this board in the past, immigration is part of our debt and spending problem (along with being part of other problems as well).

No, it relates to saving America from Obama first, then worry about how much steering Romney/Ryan need from the House & Senate.

At least they respect Constitutional constraints, and won’t act unilaterally, as Obama has.

Looks like Ryan will go which way the wind blows, which means we can’t trust him.

Romney’s past says he has no problem creating laws by executive order. But if you’re one of those types who believes it’s ok because Romney’s lawless socialism was only at the state level, you just hold on tight to your dreams.

Yeah, but we’ve seen that game before.

They know the heat’s on, so they “talk tough” on immigration to get elected.

After elected, they walk it back and do what they intended to do all long.

When the next election rolls around and people start making noise about the betrayal, they roll out their lackeys to remind us all that “this is the mostest importantest election EVAH!” and that those complaining about their doubletalk are just “helping to get _fill in the blank_ elected!!!”

Wash, rinse, repeat.

I agree ...a good reply ...

It bothers me greatly that during the entire 2012 GOP Primary debates ...

we never heard "once" ... from Myth Romney ...

lead an answer with the phrase ... "The Constitution says ..."

like Newt Gingrich did frequently ...

Have a great evening ....
