Salon Writer Describes Joe Biden as the 'Practically Perfect Vice President'

Satire or not satire? You be the judge.

When you read the title of Jonathan Bernstein's Salon article, "Joe Biden: The 'practically perfect' vice president," you figure he must be joking. However, when you begin reading his story you can see that Bernstein was serious...or was he? Your humble correspondent considers himself to be a good judge of the often fine dividing line between satire and seriousness but in this case I am not so sure. The following paragraph in defense of Biden seems to start out seriously but was Bernstein pulling our legs at the end?

Read here a few days ago Biden was in rehab for alcoholism in 2009. Imagine if a Republican had done that. 24/7 coverage. Constitutional crisis etc. Rat does it and there’s barely a blip.

Well, if you read the article with the thought that Hillary could have come out of that meeting a few days ago as Obama’s running mate, the tone of the article slips back to serious. Picture the President stopping by the Veep’s house for dinner. With Biden, he could wolf down the food without a second thought; with Hillary, there’d be a legion of very nervous food tasters required for every morsel.

I don't have a clue as to who this "Jonathan Bernstein" is. His blog says, "I'm a political scientist blogging about American politics, especially the presidency, Congress, parties, and elections," but anybody could make a claim like that. Somehow he manages to get his stuff posted at The New Republic and The Washington Post websites, but just what expertise or authority he has or why anybody should listen to him is anybody's gues.
