Watchdog: Online Social Security file can be goldmine for ID thieves

Dennis and Linnea Friemann's granddaughter showed them a website, open to everybody, that contains the Social Security numbers of millions of people who have died, including the Friemanns' relatives.

"Anyone can now have access to these numbers," the Inver Grove Heights couple complained to the Watchdog. "How can we stop this from happening?"

The answer, the Watchdog found, is that they can't. At least for now, the Social Security Death Master File is generally available, and that's a very hot topic in Congress.

There are two sides to the debate, and they each have compelling arguments.

Banks, pension funds and Medicare, among other institutions, need to know who's dead so they know when to pass accounts on to next of kin to quit paying benefits.

Anyone doing genealogical research has access to SSNs of any dead person. You just pick the age, gender and ethnic appropiate one and viola!, instant fraud.

Pointed it out to my congresscritter and guess what, the response was... crickets.

This could be handled in minutes.

Use computers to find those using the SS #’s of dead Americans.

They don’t want to do this as the imposters are contributing to the system.

Most of the imposters are illegals and a cottage industry nationwide for the left wingers.

Also, this enables the rats to enroll the dead as voters.

“Medicare, among other institutions”

Funeral homes are required to notify the Fed gov of any deaths when they file for death certificates. The Feds know exactly who, when and where a person dies. Other institutions require a death certificate so they don’t need a data base from the Feds either.

When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.

Compare that list of the dead with the voter registration rolls; delete the matches from the rolls.
