Niall Ferguson: Obama’s Gotta Go
Newsweek ^ | 08-19-2012 | Niall Ferguson

Posted on 08/19/2012 12:58:37 PM PDT by MNJohnnie

I was a good loser four years ago. “In the grand scheme of history,” I wrote the day after Barack Obama’s election as president, “four decades is not an especially long time. Yet in that brief period America has gone from the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. to the apotheosis of Barack Obama. You would not be human if you failed to acknowledge this as a cause for great rejoicing.”

Despite having been—full disclosure—an adviser to John McCain, I acknowledged his opponent’s remarkable qualities: his soaring oratory, his cool, hard-to-ruffle temperament, and his near faultless campaign organization.

Yet the question confronting the country nearly four years later is not who was the better candidate four years ago. It is whether the winner has delivered on his promises. And the sad truth is that he has not.

The lengthy article is well worth the read and for keeping to debate with Libs.

One paragraph that I particularly liked was not about Obama's failings...it was about the capabilities of Paul Ryan:

Over the past few years Ryan’s “Path to Prosperity” has evolved, but the essential points are clear: replace Medicare with a voucher program for those now under 55 (not current or imminent recipients), turn Medicaid and food stamps into block grants for the states, and—crucially—simplify the tax code and lower tax rates to try to inject some supply-side life back into the U.S. private sector. Ryan is not preaching austerity. He is preaching growth. And though Reagan-era veterans like David Stockman may have their doubts, they underestimate Ryan’s mastery of this subject. There is literally no one in Washington who understands the challenges of fiscal reform better.

Points that are also good to present to those who want to degrade Ryan.

And just a reminder to all of you FReepers who are given to broad-brush attacks on the professoriate. That piece taking Obama’s record to pieces, was written by Professor Niall Ferguson, Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University, and Senior Research Fellow at Jesus College, Oxford University.

Professor Ferguson has also written and given lectures on why the young, if they knew what was in their best interests, would all support austerity measures on the other side of the pond, and join the TEA Party on this.

Here's how I see things:

1) Seeing the coal miners lined up to meet Romney is significant.
2) The enthusiasm of 2008 Obama voters will be dialed down many notches.
3) Some 2008 Obama voters won't vote.

4) Some 2008 Obama voters will change sides

Very interesting. that NewSpeak would publish this.

Some expect there to be a shake up on the Dem ticket soon.
