A 54-year-old man died on Sunday after setting himself on fire outside the Italian parliament last week to highlight his struggle with unemployment, police said.
Angelo di Carlo suffered 85 percent burns after the incident in front of the lower house of parliament - the Chamber of Deputies - in central Rome during the early hours of August 11, Italian media reported.
Police on duty nearby put out the flames with fire extinguishers and took him to hospital.
The widower was facing economic difficulties after losing his job and had struggled for years before that with temporary work contracts that offered little protection or benefits, according to media reports.

Light a man a fire and he’ll be warm for a day.
Light him on fire and he’ll be warm the rest of his life.
I always wonder where the relatives were in these cases.
There are better ways to deal with things. Permanent solution, temporary problem.
That’s oddly profound.
It’s also (suicide) a very permanent solution to such a temporary problemn and, yes.... it is sad too.
I wonder...did he end up with a thin or thick crust?
Yep.
If they would stop voting for socialist governments.........
He made a political statement.
But he also made an ash of himself......
May God have mercy on his soul.
A well done protest.
That reminds me...
When feeling nostalgic about old TV shows, it saddens me that the producers of Columbo didn’t think to have Sophia Loren play the elusive Mrs. Columbo... in a cameo on a last episode.
For years Mrs. Columbo was often mentioned by Lt. Columbo, usually for being a big fan of the famous author/chef/actor [who turned out to be the perp]. And then there were the times when Mrs. Columbo was supposed to join her husband at a restaurant or event, but alas, something came up at the last minute.
So no Mrs. Columbo ever materialized (until that silly Mrs. Columbo series with the completely unsuitable-for-the-role Kate Mulgrew).
Anyway,
Consider a scene where Lt. Columbo (poor guy never got a promotion) is sitting in a restaurant booth, casually chatting with the others when lo and behold, Mrs. Columbo actually appears.
Of course the lovely, animated Ms. Loren is wearing a clingy dress and is just being her sweet self, while everyone is trying desperately not to uh, go into cardiac arrest due to the smoking hot Mrs. Columbo. She leans over, kisses her husband before he can even stand up, and apologizes that she can only say a quick “Ciao”, as she has to meet up with her gardening club.
And of course Columbo is his regular self, saying good-bye to his wife, telling her he understands and to enjoy her time with the ladies...
And after Mrs. Columbo departs, while the companions at the table are still trying to discreetly compose themselves, Colombo casually remarks, “Oh Mrs. Colombo, she always has so much energy for everything... don’t know how she does it...”
lol
/lament :)
So...........life before combustion is basically the same after? pointless display to an uncaring public.
Prayers for a misguided soul.
