A Historic Return For U.S. Marines To Colt Sidearms
The Hartford Courant ^ | August 19, 2012 | MATTHEW STURDEVANT

WEST HARTFORD — — The newest Colt .45-caliber pistol is touted for its durability and design.

It is tested to make sure it can be dropped in water, covered in mud, immersed in sand or ice or left in a dust storm — and still be able to get off a round when you pull the trigger.

"Virtually, it's indestructible," said Casimir Pawlowski, who works in international sales and technical sevices for Colt Defense LLC. "You can drive over these things with a Humvee and they're still gonna work. It's like a brick that shoots bullets."

“I understand Colt presents a pair of 1911s to every president.”

That would be about the reason I would be interested in the job.

A pistol can be an automatic, semi-automatic, revolver or single shot.

The way you define automatic pistol above, please post a link or a picture of one. You can't because there isn't one.

Indeed! Much to be proud of!

Great pistol, made by Americans in America, for the American Marines. Sometimes it all comes together.

Cheers

Trigger pull has nothing to with the presence of a hammer. And no, it’s not the case. Desert Eagles, the entire Colt line, most Barettas, Walthers, etc all have hammers.

The trigger pull was difficult on your father’s long Colt because you weren’t doing it right. To accurately shoot a revolver, you cock the hammer with your thumb and then shoot. When shooting that way, the trigger pull is a fraction of what is when you use the trigger to rotate the cylinder and pull back the hammer.

Oh, and fire rate has a lot to do with caliber. I can squeeze off .22 shots as fast as my finger will twitch. A Desert Eagle in action express, not so much.

I don't know if there is some sort of definitive source for firearm nomenclature, but I'd need to see something to back that up.

Browning developed ammo for his weapons....32 ACP, .45 ACP...as in Automatic Colt Pistol. Self-loading, if you will.

Definition of automatic pistol, automatic - a pistol that will keep firing until the ammunition is gone or the trigger is released

The M1911 is not an automatic pistol. Additionally from your own link in the text following told ad, While searching through back issues, AmericanRifleman.org found the very first advertisement for a 1911 pistol to ever run in an NRA publication. Even then, the 1911 held a fascination as one of the first reliable semi-auto handguns to be offered to the public. . From colts own web site

Colt pistols have long represented the gold standard in magazine-fed semi-automatic handguns.

Modern semi-automatic pistols all trace their roots to the famed Colt M1911 pistol, designed by John Browning and the standard-issue U.S. military sidearm from 1911 to 1985. Colt 1911 pistols and their descendants were in the hands of confident World War I, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam-era servicemen. Colt customers today can purchase reproductions of these weapons, each faithfully manufactured to the original specifications from factory blueprints.

What I want to know is why the standard sidearm for the U.S.Navy SEALS is a Sig Sauer un-manly 9mm?

Perhaps this is what I don’t understand...

On a modern Colt 45, does firing off one round eject the round AND “cock” the hammer?

Notice that advertisement has “Colt Automatic Pistol” plastered all over it in bold letter. It’s always been known as the Colt Automatic pistol.

How else would you get another round in the chamber? Of course it does.

one trigger pull per shot, that is what makes it “semi auto”

Assuming that you weren't joking: the terms semi-automatic and automatic mean the same thing when applied to both pistols and shotguns.

There are a few full-auto shotguns. The Glock 18 is a full-auto pistol. Glock 18

Automatic can mean automatic loading of the next shell or cartridge, or full-auto firing as in a machine gun.
