Ann Coulter: If Akin loves his country, he will step aside
Human Events ^ | August 20, 2012 | Ann Coulter

Posted on 08/20/2012 3:20:03 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

I won’t hate Todd Akin officially unless he refuses to withdraw from the Missouri Senate race. If he does withdraw, honorably sacrificing his personal interests to save the country, it will be time for all good men to rally around Akin as an American patriot.

Akin was one of nine GOP candidates in the primary to challenge Missouri’s left-wing, tax-cheat sitting Democratic senator, Claire McCaskill. McCaskill is Chuck Schumer in a dress. Totally out of step with the good voters of Missouri, her seat should be an easy win for Republicans this year.

Curiously, Democrats ferociously supported Akin in the GOP primary. McCaskill’s supporters spent $2 million to make Akin her opponent and also crossed over to vote for Akin in the Republican primary – and that’s been admitted in The New York Times.

Now we know why. The rape comment was a totally unforced error on a day that should have been a smashing triumph for the Romney-Ryan ticket.

Akin wasn’t asked some out of the blue question no Republican candidate has ever been asked: He was asked the most jejune, obvious question every Republican is asked in any race for any office. How can a Republican not have an answer for: “What about abortion in the case of rape and incest?”

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Instead, Akin rambled about “legitimate rape” – violating an ironclad rule of politicians that the word “legitimate” should never appear within 15 yards of the word “rape.” And he talked about the medical possibility of becoming pregnant from a single traumatizing rape.

He’s not a talk radio host. He’s not sitting around shooting the breeze in a college dorm room. This is a politician who should have a clear, nonthreatening answer at the ready for the most cliched question in the MSM’s playbook.

Although this is a distraction we don’t need right now, it looks like McCaskill outsmarted herself. She worked to get the weakest opponent for herself - she just didn’t realize he would blow himself out of the race in time for someone stronger to take his place.

As Ann Coulter points out (picutes, please), this was a completely unforced and stupid gaffe from soemone who ought to know better. It’s true that a liberal Democrat wouldn’t be condemned like this, but why did Akin have to do it at all? If he stays in the race, there will likely be other such stumbles. Word on the block is that Akin will be dropping out tomorrow.

http://www.humanevents.com/2012/08/20/what-happens-if-akin-leaves-the-race/

A lot of prominent Republicans are calling on him to drop out, and he probably will. Ann Coulter correctly points out that Sarah Steelman would be a good choice who would take the gender issue off the table. IMHO, other good choices include ex-Senator Jim Talent and state Auditor Tom Schwich. Other oossible replacement candidates include ex-Senator John Ashcroft (not a good idea, IMHO) and businessman John Brunner.

Excellent point. I’ll bet you play a mean game of chess.

I agree with Coulter. Even if there is some likelihood that Akin could survive, there is way too much at stake to take any chances. Get out now, buddy.

This. If he’s out by 5 PM tomorrow, the Dems can go and pound sand. Bring in Brunner or Steelman and take the fight to McCaskill, go after her for her tax issues, her shoddy voting record as an Obama puppet and more, enough of these goofy shenanigans, let’s go!!!!

If Anne loved America she’d be asking a whole crapload of RINOs to step down but its apparently more important to her that the inside the beltway crowd likes her.

Can’t believe how stupid politicians can be. They get in front of a microphone and do not have enough sense to shut the - - - k up. Have to babble on just to tallk.

That implies that there are candidates out there who could "step up" and replace them and actually get elected.

But there aren't, so what would be the point? Should Romney step down and let Alan Keyes run against Obama? Because he was so successful in 2004?

Hopefully there are means to force this imbecile to get out of the race. If he continues with his stupidity he could cause a lot more damage than he has already.

At this point he only has democrats wanting him to continue being a moron.

Actually virtually anyone who Romney faced in the primaries would be a far more acceptable choice. After all Mitt is pretty good at shoving his feet in his mouth.

But hey, thanks for exposing the hypocrisy for me.

Exactly. If Akin steps down there will be no one “rallying” around him. He will just be an also-ran loser, and will be forgotten by the party. Many pro-life groups have rallied to his defense, if he hangs tough, this tempest in a teapot will be over within the next news cycle. If he steps down, there will be a whole other round of news surrounding the new pick... will it be the 2nd place guy, or the 3rd place gal? Another week of distraction and not talking about Obama’s great depression. Akins had it spot on this morning when he clarified his remarks. Repubs are only helping the Dems muddy the water right now...

Ann Coulter is an idiot. Akin needs to double down on the side of life and stand on his principles.

It is not legal to kill the rapist, but it is legal to murder the baby.

Something is seriously broke.
