Akin's Rape Remark Draws Tea Party Pressure for Him to Quit
Yahoo News ^ | August 20, 2012 | RUSSELL GOLDMAN and COLLEEN CURRY

Pressure mounted on Rep.Todd Akin to quit his Missouri Senate race today despite his repeated refusals to step down over his incendiary comments about rape.

Earlier in the day, moderate Republicans campaigning in bitterly contested battle ground states called on Akin to exit the race. By late in the afternoon, conservative elements of the party, including an influential super PAC and the Tea Party Express called on him to terminate his race for the good of the party.

Tea Party Express Chairman Amy Kremer said Akin's remarks that women rarely became pregnant from "legitimate rape" were "unfortunate and inappropriate" and added that they had become a distraction that would cost Republicans the chance to beat Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill and ultimately any chance at winning the Senate.

"It is critical that we defeat Senator Claire McCaskill in November, but it will be too difficult to achieve that with Todd Akin as the conservative alternative. He should step down and give conservatives a chance at taking back the Senate in November," Kremer said in a statement.

The legal deadline for Akin to withdraw his name from the ballot is 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Todd Akin and his staff are having a prayer vigil tonight and will be making an announcement sometime tomorrow. I know it’s difficult, but hope he does what’s needed for the country. Too much is at stake.

Heard him on Hannity a couple hours ago and he seemed adamant to continue. I guess he can't fathom that his momentary lapse into misstatements now outweigh all his good ideas/motives.

Sounds like Clayton Williams is alive and well...

We just have to pray he does the right thing and drops out. Akin will lose this seat now if he stays in the race, and with his loss our chances of retaking the US Senate are seriously endangered.

I say stop trying to overthink it in defending this guy. He is not ready for prime time as a candidate. He has to go or we lose that senate seat, and possibly it could have ramifications nationally as the Dems will keep referring to his statements.
Drop out.

Regardless of his intentions, regardless of his motivations, regardless of his record, this guy is now defined by his bone-headed remark. It was a poor choice of words, and it’s not fair, but such is life.

The Dems and the media will be ecstatic if he stays because they can continue gassing about this incident rather than talk about Obama, his record, his lack of transparency, and of course the economy.

It’s tough, but he needs to drop out now, so we can get this issue out of the news.

Here's a link, but it's Human Events and I don't consider them a reliable news source.

Todd Akin and his staff are having a prayer vigil tonight...

Akin: "Just give us a sign, Lord!"

Suddenly overhead!

Akin: "Just a sign! One little sign!"

He is not ready for prime time as a candidate.

Yup, that's all there is to it. All the good intentions, great ideas, etc, in the world don't matter if someone is a bad candidate who makes dumb statements.

Akin's just not ready for a statewide general election. His statement was so incredibly dumb that it has already essentially guaranteed a loss if he stays in the race. His fellow conservatives would now be forced to run against him all over the country to prove they are sensitive to rape. The guy is done and every effort has to be made to get him out of the race.

LOL, Akin’s only remaining supporter IS Claire McCaskill. She basically gave an interview where she was quoted as saying “I find it appalling that these party big-wigs are jumping on him now, he did apologize.”

Your game’s up Claire, your patsy gave it up well before even you expected it.

LOL, well we still need him to quit the race by 5 PM tomorrow. From what I gather as of this moment, he is determined to stay in the race.

Yes, it was hilarious watching McCaskill defending him. You know she is just counting down the minutes, hoping against hope he doesn't drop out by tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks. I’m pretty sure Akin sees the writing on the wall and he’ll hang up tomorrow. He’s practically been runover by the GOP establishment over night

Just heard on The Mark Levin show that he is going on Piers Morgan tonight. Get each for more faux outrage from the commies at CNN. Wonder if he is having his prayer vigil before or after CNN? This is becoming a ridiculous circus side show.

Unbelievable. This guy couldn’t handle Hannity, he’s going to get torn a new one by that limey hyena.

It’s funny, but...

When a lib pol screws the pooch, most other libs jump in to cover for him/her...all the while screaming “taken out of context”.

When a conservative pol screws up (like Akin), most conservatives do not try to hide the truth or make excuses. They demand the pol’s ouster.

Libs should learn a lesson from the conservatives.
