Non-Gang Victim Targeted In Salinas

Can being in a certain age range in parts of Monterey County, put a target on your head? Central Coast News found out just how dangerous it is to simply be a young man living in the county. We took a look at how you don't have to be in a gang to become a victim.

Salinas police said on the latest is a 21-year-old young man, shot while he was walking near Parajo St. and Gabilan St just after 8pm Sunday night. Police said he was asked one question before it happened-what gang was he in? He said none and walked away. Moments later he was shot in the back with a small caliber handgun.

Local probation officers said violence toward non-gang members is something everyone needs to be aware of.

"But a kid could have no gang affiliation but because he's in a gang neighborhood, there might be individuals that have issues with that certain person and they may just be in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Monterey County probation officer Bob Reyes.

Please define what "a gang" is?

Depending on "The One" doing the defining, it could be you...

when I was a senior in high school (1957) I was my county's representative to the Wisconsin governors conference on children and youth.

The topic of my speech was basically that society would recieve the level of gang activity that they would tolerate. My advice was to accept a ZERO level of this nonsense and you would experience very little of it.

Over many years, and being a youth services officer in the Indiana Department of Corrections, I have been proven correct time after time.

These "gang members" are useless individuals without their so called Homies, Bro's, whatever. There should be no tolerance whatsoever when they are suspected or accused of a crime.

As individuals, these idiots are basically harmless "tough guys" but in their GANGS, they can be more than troublesome. When, someday, parental control returns, these useless pieces of human debris could actually be made to understand that their role in life is not to steal, harm, terrorize, but to earn, assist, donate, volunteer, whatever. Until we stop cranking out babies from unwed, uncommitted parents, we will not solve this problem.

I lived in Salinas back in the early-mid 60’s.What a neat little city. Wasn’t majority hispanic yet. There was very little crime. You could say the same for Watsonville.

This used to be a good country.

Give ‘em a hammer and teach them to make gravel out of big rocks.

And when you shoot an unarmed person in the back, you should be doing that until you're an old man.

You'd be sick to see it today. Yet, try and get a CCW permit in Monterey county to be able to defend yourself and your family. The place is disgusting.
