After a convoluted series of events, embattled GOP Senate nominee Todd Akin stood up CNN host Piers Morgan in prime time tonight and set the stage for a fundraising drive that Akin hopes would keep him in the U.S. Senate race in Missouri. Outraged, Morgan called Akin a "gutless little twerp" before saying that the Congressman has an open invitation to appear on the show.
Both Piers Morgan and showrunner Jonathan Wald alerted the world that Akin would be appearing on CNN at 9pm to discuss his controversial comments regarding rape, pregnancy and abortion, and to discuss the widespread GOP calls for dismissing himself from the GOP nomination.
Shortly afterwards, however, Dana Loesch reached out to the Akin campaign and discovered that Rep. Akin was not to appear on CNN.
Which is how we ended up looking at Piers Morgan and an empty chair at 9pm.
Earlier today, the National Republican Senatorial Committee announced that they would not be spending money to support Akin, and GOP Super PAC American Crossroads followed suit. In a bid to raise some money after these abandonments, Akin launched a fundraising drive this evening, saying "I'm in this to the end" and "I've just begun to fight."
The people from Missouri who elected me know Im not perfect. They dont make perfect people. We all make mistakes. When you make a mistake you to tell people youre sorry, you dont try and hide it. I made a mistake and Im sorry, Akin says in the email. I have just begun to fight and Im in this race to the end!
Akin has until tomorrow evening to leave his race for the Senate seat from Missouri if the Republicans are to have any chance of replacing him on the ticket.
This does not look good more and more for Akin.
Akin looks like a complete moron now...He’s toast.
I believe this means he will stay in the race. The prayer service he had probably concluded this and he didn’t want to go on a liberal show. He’s in it to win it now. I think he has a long chance but if he fights back he may just win.
He’s lost much of the woman vote.
Replace him today.
Look for Akin to be replaced by one of the runner-ups.
Unless he steps down this will be the front page news mantra of the next few months and he will be pegged the poster child for the “Republican’s War On Women”. They’re probably making the ads now. This is no longer a statewide issue.
No doubt.
I think I’d go out and find a conservative female minister from the state and just ‘bless’ her to run for his office instead.
IMHO we had a chance at 60 in the Senate, and he as FUBAR'd that and with his hubris may comdemn us to a 50 to 51 Senate by staying in the race. That slim majority and make life absolutely flippin' misrable to get anything done in the next 4 years.
It is way beyond his time for him to go, "Sarah" called it again w/ her Steelman endorsement, who knew this guy would self destruct...
This idiot a) is selfish as hell-—not very fitting for a Christian claiming to want to serve, and b) will certainly cost us the MO senate seat and possibly the senate majority, and c) even possibly MO as a now safe presidential state. Course, all the Romney-haters would love that. Barn burners of the worst sort.
Just heard a news report on Fox News on the radio that Akin isn`t quitting. Instead, he`s begun an apology tour.
I despise McCaskill, but backing Akin in the primary was an absolutely brilliant tactic. They knew he`d fumble....and he did.
And now the GOP is stuck with him.
I can’t see his fund raising drive leaving the launch pad.
How do you step in it like he did and then expect anyone to send you money?
An azzhole like Piers Morgan calling me a gutless little twerp , I would go there just to punch him in his mouth.
It’s easy to pop off and call someone names when he doesn’t expect any consequences, That’s what America has become. A nation where there are no consequences for pretty boys with big mouths.
Akin is a complete moron. He will now become the poster boy for the anti-Conservative Democrat movement. He will stay in the race because his ego will not accept that he is a total fail. Yes, he actually believes he really can win. This clown will do serious damage to the Republican hope of recapturing the Senate. I pray I am proven wrong.
Morgan is right.. Akin is a twerp.
If Akin gave two sh*ts about the COUNTRY and not his EGO, he would call a press conference five minutes from now and announce he`s withdrawing from the campaign in order to preserve whatever faint, flickering chance the GOP has of booting Harry Reid out as majority leader in the Senate.
But it`s become all about Akin`s self-pride. So we`re all screwed.
I went back and forth on this. FReepers (not the msm) have convinced me that the Akin must go. He put the bullets in both his feet and he obviously can’t dance no mo.
Delusional. Someone close to him needs to reach him and get him to quit. He will be the laughing stock for the rest of his life if he doesn’t walk away now. Sad that he let his fumbling explaination define who he is. He is a real flame and burner.
Akin, through his intransigence, may also cost Romney the state of Missouri. Can anyone imagine a path to victory WITHOUT Missouri`s EVs? Neither can I.
Akin is a self-loving guy who is woefully unconscious about the damage he has already done by opening his mouth and making the most ridiculous statement about rape that anyone could. Didn’t he learn basic physiology anywhere in his lifetime?
Now, he’s pissed off the women voters and has alarmed conservatives that he is a “loos cannon” and may go nuts at any time and say anything totally out of this world.
Yes...get him the hell out of office. However he won’t go because he got rich in office and has enjoyed many, many trips, gifts and favors from his crony affiliates while in office and does not want to lose future “gifts.”
He has political leprosy and needs to shut up and get the hell out of office.
“I would go there just to punch him in his mouth.”
If Akin had gone there, as he agreed to do, Morgan wouldn’t have had the chance to call him a gutless little twerp.
Everything this guy does just makes things worse. But he keeps digging.
