Defiant Akin says he's staying in race
CBS News ^ | 8/21/2012 | Stephanie Condon

Republicans are watching the clock as they wait for a defiant Todd Akin to drop out of the Missouri Senate race following controversial remarks he made about rape and abortion.

The six-term conservative congressman insists he's not quitting -- he said on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's radio show Tuesday afternoon that he's staying in the race.

"I haven't done anything morally or ethically wrong," Akin told Huckabee, saying the backlash against him "does seem like a little bit of an overreaction."

"We are going to continue this race for the U.S. Senate," Akin continued. "We believe taking this stand is going to strengthen our country, going to strengthen, ultimately, the Republican Party."

However, Akin is facing intense pressure from within his own party to drop out of the competitive race against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. He could easily do so -- before 5 p.m. Central Time today. If Akin exits today, the state Republican party will have 28 days to replace him on the ballot. If today's deadline passes, Akin could still withdraw from the race before Sept. 25, but if he did so during that window, the Missouri GOP would have to obtain a court order to replace his name on the ballot. After Sept. 25, the state will not change the names on the state ballot, no matter what.

A close Akin confidante tells CBS News that he will consider his standing over the coming weeks in advance of the Sept. 25 deadline.

no its not because of his strong pro-life stance, its because of his political incompetence and his idiotic rape stance.
he is now more toxic that COD and will hurt his party and his causes.

... has NO clue how to win an election ...

That's what has me scratching my head about this unforced error. He is a six-term congresscritter. He knows how to win.

I wonder if there might be a way for the GOP to excommunicate (or something similar, "dismiss?" "lockout?") Mister Akin.

Flyers about what? In West Virginia, they are that concerned about someone from Missouri?

The check from Soros cleared his account.

Yes, Adkins has made his apology time to move on, but the GOP is the one who is fuming.

Let the Missouri voters decide if this is important enough to put in a Democrat who voted to enslave their medical care.

campaign cash is limited. now that he has proven to be a toxic ,unwinnable moron; cash has to be sent to winnable candidates.

So now we want to destroy this man because of his strong pro-life stance?

His pro-life stance is absolutely NOT the problem.

An old conservative christian white male politician offering a condescending contrary explanation of how a women's mind and body actually reacts to rape exposes his clueless political instincts.

"Why punish the child?" is all he needed to say. Period. It's a solid position. But, he couldn't help myself.

I would bet money (if I were a betting person) that the woman was a Dem, and likely an attorney (good at lying).

I’m no expert on rape so I won’t contribute to the learned discussion, but I do know that this comb over does not belong in the greatest deliberate body on Earth!

I thought he was running for the United States Senate.

I forget which district he represents, near the St. Louis area, but it is not the same thing as running for state wide office against a liberal incumbent. AND most especially when you are a sure win. That old sow Claire was doing everything she could for the past year to hide herself from Obama... Personally, I think the poll numbers went to his head and he forgot what a lying conniving snake he is running against. AND her biggest campaign contributor the JonStewart media...

I get the feeling that he’s doing a political wind check and he’ll watch the polls and the response he gets over the next couple of weeks, I also feel like McCaskill will hold off until that Sept 25 deadline approaches, if he’s still on the ballot, she’s going to go nuclear on him.

Ideally the left desperately WANTS him on the ballot, but I don’t think they necessarily want to fully unload on him until that deadline passes and no further changes could be made to the ballot, but the longer he stays on, the less chance a newer candidate would have to run on anything other than “I’m not Claire McCaskill”, which considering the level of McCaskill’s incompetence, could possibly just be enough.

The Democrats, who excuse a lot in their nominees, would demand that this person step down because he sounded like a crackpot.

That's funny, you just reminded me of somebody. Ever hear of Geoffrey Fieger? Hey, cc, remember Geoff? Suddenly I feel a teeny bit sorry for MI Rats...(I am sure it'll pass very quickly)

“I haven’t done anything morally or ethically wrong,”

What world does this idiot live in?

If getting elected had only to do with ethics and morals we wouldn’t have the current idiot in the White House, nor would we have had Bill Clinton, John Kennedy, FDR, or assorted other scoundrels in there.

Its about a lot more.

And flushing that witch (figuratively - no attack meant on Wiccans) McCaskell out of office is more important to the salvation of America than this idiot’s political career.

Forget that! The Demoncats have as their keynote speaker for the convention one William Jefferson Clinton. Mr. Akin misspoke on the subject of rape.
There are some including myself who believe Mr. Clinton is an unindicted rapist!
Mr. Akin won the primary, end of story. It is time to challenge the propaganda wing of the Odumbo reelection campaign ( the main stream media) and if they want this fight I say let’er rip.

Screw the Dems and their War on Women meme. Most Liberal women are at war with themselves, Just ask Rosie O’whatever!

Time to fight the war of idea’s. Take it to the people!! The American People have had it with these disgusting, self hating Anti American POS’s and their fake outrage!

If the country and the election hinge on this horse crap, were screwed already. Let’s have it out and let the chips fall where they may.

He is making a political calculation like a RINO.

Exactly. It's all about making a point and if it helps the leftist Dem, then so be it.

Like what that Virgil Goode character is doing in Virginia.

This guy wasn’t able to competently answer a basic question about an issue that supposedly is near and dear to his heart. What does that say about his master of other issues.

I don't know anything about him but so far - I am unimpressed with his communication skills. That is the MAIN THING in the U.S. Senate - they debate and "speechify" much more than the members of the House.... If he gets this tangled up in an issue that he should know backward and forward... what will he do when/if he is debating other issues????

If he is so conservative, why did the party establishment back him over the conservative candidates? Why his big endorsement from an ultramoderate?
