Republicans are watching the clock as they wait for a defiant Todd Akin to drop out of the Missouri Senate race following controversial remarks he made about rape and abortion.
The six-term conservative congressman insists he's not quitting -- he said on former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee's radio show Tuesday afternoon that he's staying in the race.
"I haven't done anything morally or ethically wrong," Akin told Huckabee, saying the backlash against him "does seem like a little bit of an overreaction."
"We are going to continue this race for the U.S. Senate," Akin continued. "We believe taking this stand is going to strengthen our country, going to strengthen, ultimately, the Republican Party."
However, Akin is facing intense pressure from within his own party to drop out of the competitive race against Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill. He could easily do so -- before 5 p.m. Central Time today. If Akin exits today, the state Republican party will have 28 days to replace him on the ballot. If today's deadline passes, Akin could still withdraw from the race before Sept. 25, but if he did so during that window, the Missouri GOP would have to obtain a court order to replace his name on the ballot. After Sept. 25, the state will not change the names on the state ballot, no matter what.
A close Akin confidante tells CBS News that he will consider his standing over the coming weeks in advance of the Sept. 25 deadline.

But the PPP poll numbers were rigged with Pubbie oversampling of +6%, which makes it pure fabrication. GOP does not turn out +6% in elections. No, I think the problem with Mr. Akin is he believes his own press releases.
Amen. His misguided distinction of "legitimate" rape and awkward explanation of the physiological responses involved were absolutely irrelevant to the question he'd been asked.

We all know that rape can result in pregnancy. You don't need to preface your response with some unrelated mumbo-jumbo to try to make yourself appear "moderate".
Some people just are not ready for prime time. Akin, unfortunately, is one of them.

Yep, and even more than that. Every congressional Democrat will be able to use Akin's remarks as a club against their Republican opponent.

I supported Akin at first, but believe this has now become too big...he ought to bow out gracefully.
He was not wrong for his position (I even posted a thread that quoted from a book that said basically what he said), but the gaffe is not the issue anymore. I’d rather see a more liberal Republican in that seat than have McCaskill there.

No, he’s not beating her in the polls, the Democrat pollster had to do something like a 12-pt swing oversampling MO Republicans just to show him competitive (and no doubt try to encourage him to stay in).
If giving not just a Senate seat but the whole Senate to the Dems isn’t immoral and wrong, I don’t know what is!

The infuriating thing is that this guy was basically brought to us by Mike Huckabee, whose one true talent is a deft touch when discussing socially conservative positions. It really makes it clear that Akin is a dense, stubborn moron who lives in a bubble and doesn’t learn from his colleagues or his mistakes.
The concept of “psychic trauma” and its effect on pregnancy is not a new one.
You have to calculate everything you say based on the Upside vs Downside.
There was no upside to what Akin said, even if he was right, but just look at what the downside was....You have to be smart about these things.

It is absolutely amazing that just 2 men that have worn the GOP mantle for decades have very likely doomed America to a financial and social disintegration. John Roberts, with his convoluted and mystifying opinion, and now Todd Akin, by his refusal to quit for the good of the nation, are attempting to make Obama’s legacy a permanent stain on the Constitution.
If the Senate ends up 50-50 because of this Republicans would be in the majority because Paul Ryan would be the tie vote if Romney wins
