A South Carolina man has pleaded guilty to a federal fraud charge in a scheme authorities say includes severed limbs.
Gerald B. Hardin of Cayce admitted in federal court in Columbia on Tuesday that he was part of an insurance fraud scheme. Hardin told Judge Cameron Currie that he used a pole saw to cut off the hand of a mentally disabled man in Sumter County in 2008.
Federal prosecutors say another man filed insurance claims based on the injury and collected more than $671,000. In exchange for his participation, Hardin said that man loaned him money for a down payment on a new truck and paid some of his monthly rent.
Hardin has agreed to help prosecutors. He faces up to five years in prison when he's sentenced later.
Sumter again.
Sick MFer’s
Jeez! How much for a good right arm?
Why wouldn't he use a saw, or a chain saw and stage an accident?
How the heck did he get a pole to actually cut off the hand? Did he swing the pole? Did he drop the pole on the arm? Did he use two poles and pinch the arm in between them?
THESE ARE ALL VALID QUESTIONS!
Shrewd dude.
I believe it was a “pole saw” more than likely the electric or gas powered chain saw variety. It’s actual use is to trim limbs. Tree limbs that is.
$671,000 for a hand? That’s a nice insurance policy!
I remember getting my first life insurance policy, from my job, and seeing there was compensation for losing a hand, limb, eye, etc, but it was maybe 20 grand or something. Not really enough to entice me to consider self mutilation.
Now, for 671k, I might start thinking about it. You mostly use the one hand anyway, right? I’d hate to give up playing the piano, but I could always break out my old trombone from high school.
I doubt you have to be that shrewd to get the sweet end of the deal when your partner is mentally disabled. Maybe just picking the slow partner was the shrewd part.
I get it, but the article simply said POLE.
Dang, that gotta hurt!
Shame on FReepers who don't know what a pole saw is. Click the pic:

It worked for Obama.
Well, it has worked so far, but we’ll see how that turns out during the VP debate :)
