That is pending research - there is currently no research that supports Akin’s “shut the whole thing down” position.

Cortisol secretion from consistent stress doesn't indicate if one major stress inducing incident (a violent rape) would be enough to increase the chance of miscarriage.

Moreover the way Akin formulated it - if pregnancy resulted it was almost certainly not “legitimate” rape. If you want to wander into the tall weeds of if they do not miscarry because the rape wasn't stressful enough; all I can tell you is that there are tigers in that tall grass - do NOT go there.

The study I have seen about miscarriage of pregnancies caused by rape have the rate at about 11% - well within normal miscarriage rapes.

Around 30,000 rapes from pregnancies happen every year according to the same source - and that would fall well in line with 1.2 million abortions per year, 1% of which are the result of rape - and around 50% of pregnancies caused by rape resulting in abortion.

30,000 pregnancies caused by rape per year doesn't speak well of the pure conjecture (there is no data to support it) that women have a way to “shut that whole thing down”. Yet zealots continue in their self righteous and self serving ignorance insisting it just has to be true.

“One thing at a time. I want to get the guy out of office that believes in infanticide first and Akin has not helped that in any way shape or form.”

Hi,

I can’t get by the “con” of Romney. At least evil Herod
is up front about his agenda. Neither men are Christian.

Pray for an “election miracle”, pray for Mitt and BHO’s conversion.

The party won't do it. They can't do it. They've been caught by their hasty reaction. They jumped the gun and said that they were cutting off his funding, figuring that would force him out. Now that didn't work, but if the RNC backs down now then they'll never hear the end of it. Romney and Priebus and Rowe and the rest will have to explain why they all of a sudden think Akin's remarks were OK and whether or not they believe that a rape can lead to pregnancy.

If Snuff can ask them about banning birth control out of nowhere, then nothing will stop the liberal media from asking the Repubs any questions about rape and pregnancy that they can come up with, not the RNC funding Akin, not Akin dropping out, not anything.

After the convention the Republicans can say they met with Akin, believe he's sincere in his apology, and need to restore his funding because MCCASKILL AND OBAMA ARE FAR WORSE FOR THE COUNTRY! Which is the right message and the one they should have had FROM THE BEGINNING! You're absolutely right they jumped the gun. That's why when some scandal happens to the Democrats, they don't get out there and immediately call for a resignation. Because if they do, they look weak when the guy doesn't comply.

Good to see you too! Unbelievable that Akin aided by Huck is determined to sacrifice the Senate and overturning Obamacare, as well as appointment of prolife sup ct justices.

Nah, the PACS will come back. Akin has refudiated his remarks himself.

I wish he’d said something conciliatory about Rromney though.
This RINO/socon rift is too easy for the Dems to exploit.
Some one has to start showing the leadership to heal it.

Yet zealots continue in their self righteous and self serving ignorance insisting it just has to be true.

No "zealots" feel the need to prove that's true. This is only being discussed to show that Akin wasn't some "crazy" for suggesting it. There is enough research out there supporting the idea that it's easy to understand how someone might jump the gun a little or falsely remember that it was factual. Global warming's bunk, but you don't have to be crazy to believe it, just mistaken.

Well he is staying and that is it. It is still early and if this happened 2 weeks before the election then forget it but hopefully he will recover. This election is about 0bama and I hope people will vote accordingly.

Some will. Some never left. Rove won't be back, but I'm sure there are others out there who will start supporting Akin.

I wasn't aware that the social conservatives wanted to heal the rift.

He was crazy to say it and crazy to think it - and the doctors who told him that (supposedly) believed it without any data.

I repeat, for those of you in Rio Linda, there is absolutely no data to suggest that pregnancies from rape are more likely to miscarry. The most recent research on the subject found a rate of 11% miscarriage.

Even if the rape was the pregnancy resulting from the rape formed a consistent level of stress that would result in a tripling of the miscarriage rate - the majority of those highly stressed women would STILL not miscarry.

"They jumped the gun and said that they were cutting off his funding, figuring that would force him out."

Looks like he wasn't bought with 30 pieces of silver. Rove thinks money is the key to politics and the campaign should be about money, not social issues. Rove tried the political equivalent of finding a horse head in your bed to anyone who wants to run on social issues.

You misunderstand (I admit I didn’t state it in the best way). I want Akin GONE!! Just not because the GOP establishment wants him gone, but because I know if he isn’t replaced we WILL hand that seat to the Dems.

Ooopps...a thousand apologies. The folks who want Akins to stay *do* have a point but they somehow fail to see the damage he's done to himself, and very possibly Romney as well,in the *real world*.Rush sometimes says "I'm the mayor of Realville".In a perfect world Akins, after having simply said "oops,I worded that incorrectly",could have and should have stayed in.But in "Realville" he's toast...a peculiar type of toast that could very well cost us *everything* in Novemeber.Osama's already brought this nation to its knees.we cannot give him the opportunity to finish the job with 4 more years of Executive Orders,"recess appointments" and "Czars".

Akin is totally for life, vote for him and you will beat
evil McCaskill. The never discussed problem now is
ObamaCare was modeled after RomneyCare. Fall for promises from Mitt who doesn’t believe in the Blessed Trinity.

Scary....

For all of you who thought Akin was stupid, he just managed to get a bunch of free air time and the rapt attention of millions just by calling a press conference on a Friday afternoon.

He should do this every Friday until the election. It's time to make the media dance to our tune, rather than the other way round.

This is really unbelievable. The guy is determined to make this about him. I’ve gone from not caring for The Huckster to actively detesting him.

I am REALLY over being told we’re not conservative ENOUGH or pure ENOUGH.. we don’t understand God’s will if we want Akin gone. I don’t trust zealots- no matter what.

exactly— people who do not know me are telling me i am not prolife and might as well be a democrat because i am a realist and deal in pragmatism. mindboggling as i said. Akin is flushing the prolife cause down the toilet with his hubristic refusal to get out of a race he cannot win, and which will cost us the Senate [and therefore overturning of Obamacare and the chance to put prolife justices on the sup ct]. i can no longer tolerate the purists. i believe in the power of prayer, but i also know that God uses even the IMPERFECT to effectuate His will. He didn’t use only the purists!!

BINGO!

We may not like it- it may not be fair, but perception in politics is reality- unless and until it is countered with an equally strong and convincing perception.

My initial perception was this guy is uneducated and ignorant but well-meaning. Then I listened to him on Hannity and realized he’s something more than ignorant and something a good deal less than well-meaning. He has a degree of pride and denial of reality I remember in Nixon, Clinton and most recently, Obama. He’s pathological.
