Conway police are investigating a home invasion that happened early Tuesday morning at a home in the 1600 block of 9th Avenue.

Shortly before 6:00 a.m., Conway police officers were called to the home in reference to a shooting. When officers arrived, a man was lying in the living room floor of the residence with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

Officers then spoke with the homeowner who told them that he was asleep when he awoke to find someone standing by his bed holding a machete.

Less effective, it seems, than a firearm. ;)

Drawing from childhood memories, there's no argument here. Still, there's the little matter of bringing a knife to a gun fight...

“Machetes are very effective weapons.”

Yes! (if your opponent is either a rabid bobcat, or a guy with a machete;)

No “never bring a knife to a gunfight” comments yet? Disappointing..

Anyone who forcibly enters a home with any type of weapon, isn’t there for a simple burglary. I didn’t read the entire article, but I hope the homeowner killed the perp

Technical note: It is a very bad idea to keep a pistol underneath your pillow, unless you intend to feign sleep, expecting company. A much better alternative is to hang it on a nail in the wall beside your bed, out of sight.

It’s also good to mentally gauge how quickly you wake up. There was a rumor in the Army that a person when woken up is regarded as blameless for a few seconds, if they assault whoever woke them up, in that they are not fully conscious.

While that is apocryphal, it’s probably not a good idea to wake up with a gun in your hand, if you do not come to your senses quickly.

Apparently you have never read the history of the .38 and how the 1911 came to be.

Odd that people are compelled to post about that of which they know nothing.

We have several guns in our bedroom, we also have 4 dogs in there and the bedroom door is locked. By the time we get the guns out we will be fully awake, our dogs will make sure of that.

Not there to clear some brush. I think a machete would be an excellent close quarters weapon. Blackhawk sells a few.

A machete is only effective if you know how to use it properly. Think of it as a subset of sword fighting.

It is quite good for some kinds of brush, though. I’ve seen workmen using very sharp machetes to actually trim grass. That impressed me. It was like dry shaving with a very large straight razor.

I do remember them telling us that when we woke up a guy to take the next shift on guard duty to shake him and then back way the heck back.

I didn't think it would happen but the first guy I ever woke up in the middle of the night jumped up and went swinging berserk for a few seconds. I did back off enough not to get hit.

I don't know about the part about not being responsible, but the guy really was not all there for a few seconds.
