Gunman Dies After Killing at Empire State Building
New York Times ^ | August 24, 2012 | James Barron

Posted on 08/25/2012 5:15:16 AM PDT by Zakeet

The sidewalks in Midtown Manhattan were swarming with the morning crush of office workers, and crowds of tourists were already pushing their way into one of the world’s most famous buildings. Around the corner, in the shadow of the Empire State Building, stood a 58-year-old man wearing a suit and carrying a black canvas bag. Inside the bag, the police said, was a .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

The man, Jeffrey T. Johnson, lurked behind a van parked outside the drab office building that houses the apparel importer that had laid him off almost two years ago. When Mr. Johnson spotted Steven Ercolino, a sales executive at the company who was on his way to work, he made his move.

Mr. Johnson, an office rival of Mr. Ercolino’s who the police said held Mr. Ercolino responsible for the loss of his job, pulled out the gun, fired at Mr. Ercolino five times, put the gun away and calmly walked off, trying to blend into the crowd as Mr. Ercolino lay bleeding on the sidewalk.

Mr. Johnson turned the corner onto Fifth Avenue. A few feet ahead were the shiny front doors of the Empire State Building — and two police officers who had been alerted to the shooting by a construction worker.

From about eight feet away, the officers confronted Mr. Johnson and when he pulled out his gun, they opened fire, shooting a total of 16 rounds. Mr. Johnson was killed and nine bystanders were wounded, perhaps all by police bullets.

Reminds me of the Ron White story:

"You ever see tape of the Kehoe brothers from Ohio, those two guys that get out of that white Suburban, it's been on COPS a few times? Those guys, folks, have a shootout with the police, at point... blank... range —nobody gets hurt. I would love to have been at that office the next day when that guy's being interviewed by the police.
"And then what happened?"
"Well, at that point, I unloaded my semi-automatic 9 millimeter weapon at point blank range."
"And then what happened?"
"They...left."
Nice shooting, Elmer Fudd. There was a kid in Detroit a few years ago, shot 8 bullets, hit 9 people. These cops fired 22 shots, didn't even hit the ****in' Suburban!"

I have been a long-time competitive shooter, in a number of venues, as well as the ex manager of a gun store. Most cops, highway patrol, etc are absolutely pitiful shooters of a handgun, definitely not above the average of the general population. Of course there are some who are gun enthusiasts, that love to shoot and are skilled. Most are not.

I always think back to the bank robbery film I think in Ca. where the bad guys had on ballistic vests, and the cops probably shot a hundred pistol rounds, and the perps were standing up straight and running through a hail of bullets, and it was of course said that the vests protected them. Anyone who has ever been hit by a bullet with a ballistic vest will tell you that you don’t just walk on, a solid chest hit will flatten you, just not kill you. In other words, the perps weren’t being hit at all, the vest was irrelevant. A .357 bullet with a vest on definitely takes your wind.

Front sight, front sight, front sight.

Fairly obvious that a lot of training is never done, or goes out the window in real life.

My answer will get me in trouble with the gun people here.

Police now want a gun that holds more bullets for these incidents.

Perhaps they should think more about putting the bullets where they need to be, and not foggin the area in hopes of getting a hit.

If they went back to revolvers maybe they would realize that it is more important to hit what you aim at than to spray bullts everywhere.

I am 70 years old and do not remember reading about perps getting hit with 15 or 30 bullets back when the cops used revolvers. Except of course Bonnie and Clyde, but the cops were using machine guns on them.

Changing weapons is not ever going to be a cure for poor marksmanship. They are now admitting that the guy never fired a shot, all the wounded were by the NYPD. Can you spell L A W S U I T S????
