NEW YORK – All nine people wounded during a dramatic confrontation between police and a gunman outside the Empire State Building were struck by bullets fired by the two officers, police said Saturday, citing ballistics evidence.

The veteran patrolmen who opened fire on the suit-wearing gunman, Jeffrey Johnson, had only an instant to react when he whirled and pointed a .45-caliber pistol as they approached him from behind on a busy sidewalk.

Officer Craig Matthews shot seven times. Officer Robert Sinishtaj fired nine times, police said. Neither had ever fired their weapons before on a patrol.

The volley of gunfire felled Johnson in just a few seconds and left nine other people bleeding on the sidewalk.

No idea about the ammo but they use NY triggers which have a harder pull.

This is liberals for you. They call our “one shot one kill” operations abroad as baby killing, but it is OK to have their cops pray and spray on US civilians.

It’s why the British do not let their cops carry guns. When you have an army of cops, you cannot manage their professionalism with guns. It’s too expensive and they are too career oriented and completely gay for city hall. They could care less about bystanders, and that is the Bloomberg philosophy for gun control.

No, cops are told that they need to empty the whole magazine so they can later cover their arses in court, crying to the judge: “I was so scared, I kept shooting”. If they do not like emotional shooters in court, it apparently makes them cold blooded killers in court. So, there goes...

Correction, To counter the billion rounds us civilians are buying to add to the already one hundred billion rounds had by us civilized citizens.

Now, in case you think that is an exaggeration, do the math...there are 300 million people in this country. That one hundred billion rounds is only 333 rounds per person, and if one third of ‘we the people’ are armed, that is an army of one hundred million with only 1,000 rounds each. So let’s say that only fifty million of we the people are armed, that is only 2,000 rounds each...before we buy more.

We the people use that for plinking, practice and hunting every year...if we are ‘slackers’.

“Sounds like New York’s finest could use some brushing up on the use of deadly force.”

I saw the security video and it looks like they DID hit him in the head at least once...could the bullets have then ricocheted or fragmented and struck the bystanders?

I’m no marksman but on a scale of 1 to 10 how do these officers rate ?

They hit 10 people with 16 rounds, and their target had 9-10 wounds. Barney Fife would be proud as hell.

Not to worry. They’ll be relieved and move straight to drawing their 6-digit pensions.

Good shoot?

Video shows him clearly pulling his weapon and pointing it in the general direction of the two responding officers. But it's hard to tell what one of them was shooting at, it didn't look like his weapon was pointed at the perp at all. Perp never fired a shot at the officers, and went down hard when shot.

the target simply does not instantly stop most times.

This one did. Dropped like a poleaxed steer.

Sounds to me like they were just ducking, dodging and pulling the crap out of their triggers!

One was sort of backing away as he fired.. at whatever, the other one was pretty much standing there blasting away.

Got news for you - the Brits are letting more and more cops carry guns and they’ve gotten to the point where they have multiple squads of men with submachine guns roving around in vans ‘just in case’ every hour of the day.

Many British cops that are issued sidearms are required to keep them concealed to further the ‘unarmed’ myth.

I am not certain that the cops were entirely at fault for this one. You see, their issue weapons have 13 lb triggers - that is, it takes 13 pounds of pressure to get the trigger to work. It is hard to make accurate shots when you have to fight your weapon to get every round off.

I do, however, blame NYPD’s policies and training. They’ve had notoriously atrocious firearms training/conduct policies for literally decades; the 13lb triggers were their ‘answer’ to keeping their officers from shooting each other with their then-new Glock pistols. Not better initial training, not better transition training, not discipline for screwing around with your sidearm in the squad room, not remedial training. A heavier trigger. Yeah, okay, that’s going to solve the problem. Not.

Before someone blames the Glocks, keep in mind that in the 1970s and 1980s, before the Glocks were adopted, the NYPD issued double action revolvers. And the officer ‘accidental discharge’ rate was about the same even with those.

Sheeit if they let our military in Afghanistan use the same ROE’s these cops have then we would have won the war years ago.

It’s not a matter of “not doing better”; it’s merely more evidence that there are two sets of laws.

Had any non-officer shot nine innocents while taking aim and firing at a criminal shooter while said shooter was 8 feet away, he or she would be arrested and charged.

When will the involved officers be arrested for wounding nine innocents when they were 8 feet away from the actual criminal?

It is hard to get away from the double standard. Police are treated differently. I also see cases where ordinary citizens are allowed more leeway than police are.

What we are seeing is that the transparency of society brought about by ubiquitous video recorders, is making everyone more accountable. This is making police more honest, and that is a good thing.
