The NYPD Explains Why Their Bullets Wounded Nine People Yesterday (It's not their fault)
The Atlantic ^ | August 25, 2012 | Connor Simpson

It's official. The New York Police Department have admitted that all nine people wounded yesterday in the Empire State Building shootout were from bullets they fired at Jeffrey Johnson.

CNN's David Ariosto reports the NYPD said the two officers that confronted Johnson fired a total of 16 shots. "One officer shot nine while another one shot seven," they said. Police commissioner Ray Kelly explained the injured bystanders were hit by ricocheting bullets. The shots hit "flowerpots and other objects around, so ... their bullets fragmented and, in essence, that's what caused the wounds."

The next question the NYPD will have to answer is why the two officers needed to fire 16 bullets to take down one man who, as we can see in the video, was only a few feet away from them.

Give the NYPD cops bean bag guns like the border patrol have.

If you are any indication of how NYPD trains, it explains a lot.

Don’t even PRETEND to know what its like to be in a gun battle on a crowded street and better yet, don’t even attempt to judge my service to the people of NYC as a member of the NYPD.

Ah...but think of all the bystanders that were not hit.

The two officers managed not to wound hundreds within range of their weapons and afterall, they did get their man.

Assuming a 1911, this is a neat trick.

He could have had one of those electically fired pistols where all the rounds are chambered.

NYC IS THE SAFEST LARGE CITY IN THE UNITED STATES......BY FAR! You think that’s a result of poor training? NYC is on a pace to have the fewest murders in its recorded history. 8 million residents plus 3 million workers and tourists on any given day and the city is going to average just over 1 murder a day. Combine that with the enormous task of combatting terrorism.

Criticize all you want, but until you’ve walked a mile in my shoes, or the shoes of those officers, who were placed in a situation every member of law enforcement fears, a deranged man with a gun on a crowded sidewalk, I would seriously think twice before displaying your ignorance.

Doesn’t matter if they see more than many people in 10 lifetimes as you put it. These guys are touted to be professionals and blah blah blah. The point is, they are there in a position of public trust, armed, for the safety of the citizens. They failed miserably.

First off, NY has the stupidest requirement in the world for duty weapons. A 10 pound trigger? Really? What moron came up with that stupid idea? Heavier trigger = less accuracy.

Second... If NY was 2nd Amendment Friendly, the citizens would have been able to put the shooter down and most likely with much lower risk of incidental damage. Why? non LEO’s don’t have the blanket protection that LEO’s on duty have. Thus, they are more likely to look past their target and to the consequenses of what their shots may bring.

Third.. For most cops, carrying a gun is part of the job. To many, it’s a cumbersome tool that they have to rely on. They barely pass qualifications and they don’t spend nearly as much time on the range let alone going the extra mile to become proficient in stress situations. For concealed carry persons, it’s a choice to do so. Most people I know that CC are MUCH more proficient than their LE counterparts. Why? Because it’s not part of the job, it has much more meaning for us.

For the last point, I want to comment on this comment from you... “ As a retired member of the FINEST Police Department in the world, the NYPD, I’d like to inform you that the overwhelming majority of you would crap your pants in that situation. These officers, normally assigned to the 42nd Precinct in the South Bronx, have seen more and dealt with more than the average American would see if they lived 10 lifetimes.”

If these guys have seen more than the average American in 10 lifetimes, why haven’t they put that experience to use and learned from it? You say it was a good shoot. I say it was damned lucky. Those bullets didn’t ricochet. That was piss poor training and accuracy.

Oh, and NYPD ceased being the finest police department in the world decades ago. Nothing against the individual officers, but their leadership has been corrupted by political BS agendas that have put all the officers and the public at risk. As an example, I once again bring up the 10 pound “NY trigger” on the Glocks used by NYPD. This was put in place because of accidents. That is a very bad sign when you rely on a mechanical disadvantage to compensate for a lack of training. Again, this is on the leadership, not the officers on the beat. NYPD needs to do at least 2 weeks of stressed based training every six months. They won’t do it. Why? Again, politics. The money goes to supporting welfare leeches and other social programs that are bankrupting that city. This shooting is a direct consequence of that poor decision.

My recommendation to the officers of the NYPD... if you want to be the finest PD in the world again? Introduce stress based training on a frequent interval, even if it’s extra curricular in nature and let your leadership know that politics do NOT belong in law enforcement. As it stands now, you guys have a huge uphill battle.

A bystander or two, but nine bystanders? That’s pretty good shootin’ men.

Not this time.

They had a killer pulling a gun in a crowd.
No win situation.

There was a thread the other day with video.

But it sounds like these cops are idiots.

cumbo

let me explain to you what is going on

most police have switched from serve and protect to persecute and prey on.

Many of them hide behind the badge to be a bully

many of them are on steroids and lose their little tempers

many of the are on power trips

yeah, there are bad guys, but there are also many bad cops who hide evidence, take evidence, pick and chose who will get arrested, NYC cops beat people, use broomsticks in sick ways, take money

we all know this, you should try looking at it from the perspective of the law abiding citizen sometime. You don’t protect us, you are always late, when seconds count you are 20 minutes out, just there to take the jewelry off the dead body and make a report. you prey on our teenagers for normal kid conduct while the real bad guys carry on unimpeded.

see what you and your “force” have become

There are plenty of real cases where this happens. Probably the best write up I have seen is here.

Here’s my last post on the subject, and then you can go back to your perfect world. These officers fight crime, and the politics that come along with it, on a daily basis. The NYPD trains it officers to shoot to stop when you feel your life, or someone else’s life is in imminent danger. That’s why both of these officers, who had significant time on the job, had never been in a gun battle. The fact is, the overwhelming majority of officers never discharge their weapons in their career. Why is that? Density of population. I lost track of how many times I could have discharged my firearm to stop a perp and had it classified as a “good shooting”. I thank God every day that I didn’t, and still was able to apprehend that person. Taking a life is taking a life, no matter what the situation. These officers simply didn’t have that luxury. A man, identified as a shooter, was attempting to disappear into a crowded NYC street. As I originally stated, it wasn’t “textbook”, but believe me, in this situation, there is no “textbook”. You just thank God that only two lives were lost, the original victim and the perp, who it seemed, decided to go the “suicide by cops” route. I suggest that we all pray for the families of the victim, the perp, their families, and the officers involved. All of their lives have been changed forever. And believe me, it could have been a lot worse.

NYC IS THE SAFEST LARGE CITY IN THE UNITED STATES...

Quit shouting, and come back when you can post that without the qualifier.

Ya might want to show that your big city leftist mayor and politicians no longer order the cops to write down the level of offenses in their reports, too.
