GOP platform cuts gay rights in military

President Obama's expansion of gay rights in the military, including on-base same sex marriage and wearing uniforms in gay pride parades, would be radically yanked back in a Mitt Romney administration, according to Republican platform positions taking shape in Tampa and OK'd by the candidate.

"We're pushing back," said Elaine Donnelly, of the conservative Center for Military Readiness. "This is pretty big."

While one subcommittee was tightening anti-abortion and "traditional marriage" language that won praise from the Family Research Council, a national security team moved rapidly to pull back expanded gay rights derided by critics as "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered Law."

New language included rejecting "the use of military as a platform for social experimentation," and a demand that the military provide "objective and open-minded" recommendations to the president on personnel policies.

The brass has been criticized for bowing to Obama's move to expand gay rights in the military.

Other language included affirming "cultural values...team cohesion, including intra-military special interest demonstrations" that Donnelly told Secrets was meant to stop same sex marriages and wearing uniforms in gay pride events, two hugely controversial changes under Obama.

The GOP also OK'd language blocking attempts to remove Bibles from military facilities; would exempt women from ground combat units and infantry battalions; and support for the Defense of Marriage Act. The GOP votes on the platform Monday, the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

You cannot kick them out because people now know their preferences. Attrition is the best and most legal hope.

Sure you can. All that's required is a change in the rules. All those who voluntarily outed themselves get a nice honorable discharge.

I hope the Republicans will also allow Chaplains to end their prayers with “in Jesus name we pray.”

Antoninus, I’m not following...your baseing a non vote for Romney on what McKeon said? why not base it on what the article said the R party platform will be - If Romney is accepting the nom, he should be accepting the platform to change things like the platform is looking to do. McKeon is allowed to not want to address the matter again, but if his hireups or the CIC says we’re changing some thing, seems to me McKeon’s desire to not adress it is void.

“All that’s required is a change in the rules.”

Consider the legal system that allows a mass murderer terrorist to continue to receive active duty pay while sitting in prison three years after his crimes. Instead of paying homosexual military members to sue the military, it would be better to give teeth to the longstanding PDA code - heterosexuals abide it, why don’t homosexuals?

I think gays should be banned from all public sector employment. We don’t need their kind in any public capacity and only once they have been driven back into the closest will their threat be over.

The sensible course is obvious. Focus on behavior, not “beliefs”, “opinions”, or “feelings”. UCMJ defines a standard of conduct and consequences for its breach which is published and known to all serving members. If you have an internal value system which supports such conduct your life in the military will be that much easier, but the rules exist both for the safety of those who serve as well as to support the deadly serious mission of the military.

The lame duck rat Congress in December 2010 passed the law to encourage fags in our military. This was the last hurrah of the defeated Pelosi Congress that also gave us Obamcare.

It would be unwise to suddenly make illegal what was legal - people have rights too.

There is no right to be accepted in our military. Congress should reverse the law. It is not in keeping with American traditions and morals.

Is this a joke article?

They would “radically” curtail gay rights in the military by banning on base gay weddings and uniformed military in pride parades? Yeah that will show them!

How about actually reversing DADT? What about the fact that we now have out of the closet generals? What about actually going beyond DADT and returning to the old policy of no gays in the military?

They take a mile and we take back half an inch. Nice of Romney to throw us a filthy bone, guess we should roll over now.

Dear conservatives,

When I throw a dog a bone I don’t need to know if it tastes good or not. Take the little I give you and be damn grateful I give you anything at all. I am not going to even bother to lie to you anymore, just hand over your money and votes.

-Sincerely Romney

I hear you. I agree. You said it: They take a mile and we take back half an inch. May it not remain so. Actually, I don’t think it will: Times and cultures change. We won’t forever be in this present era. I think this will be a case of “what happens will only be believed once it has taken place.”

That’s about it. “Shut up and eat it” is what Romney gives social conservatives.
