Akin’s Support Craters in Missouri
Weekly Standard ^ | 8/26/12 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 08/26/2012 3:00:52 PM PDT by rhema

Support for Republican Todd Akin’s decision to stay in the Missouri Senate race has cratered and so has his favorability. Those findings come from two new polls conducted after Akin created a firestorm with his comment about “legitimate rape.”

Republicans, by a 47 percent to 37 percent margin, think he should drop out of the Senate contest against Democrat Claire McCaskill, and self-described Akin supporters believe the same by 50 percent to 34 percent, according to a Mason-Dixon survey. Only Democrats, sensing he’s likely to lose, want him to remain a candidate, 47 percent to 37 percent.

And in a poll for conservative groups, only 24 percent of Missouri voters looked favorably on Akin and 54 percent said they regard him unfavorably.

Before his rape comment two weeks ago, Akin had a solid lead over McCaskill. Republicans counted Missouri as a likely victory that would help them take control of the Senate. Now their chances look shaky.

While Romney did well in the poll for conservative organizations, leading President Obama in Missouri by 54 percent to 41 percent, Akin trailed McCaskill, 44 percent to 36 percent. A few weeks ago, he led by five percentage points. He was ahead by 11 percentage points among independents but now is 17 points behind. Independents, by 57 percent to 25 percent, want him to drop out.

Akin, however, has vowed to stay in the race. His freefall in the two polls will make that decision more difficult to defend.

If Akin loses, it will be because he has no balls or brains

He ought to double down on the rape angle and say its time for that fat ass McCaskill stop raping the US taxpayer.

And then talk about going to DC to abolish the IRS, kick out the commies, and dismantle the Federal apparatus

Would win in a landslide..

Amen to that! Hopefully he can save his seat in the House.

I want this man to go after John Boehner like nobody in the House has. I’m really not impressed with this Congress. Obama has gotten away with so much in the last two years.

We cannot afford to lose the Senate. At the very least we need to win the Senate to keep Romney in check.

As you said, a defeat in the Senate is a victory for ObamaCare.

“If you can’t win, being right doesn’t mean anything.”

Jesus was right as he is God. He certainly didn’t appear to have won anything in this world, as he was crucified. Your statement, “If you can’t win, being right doesn’t mean anything”, has been completely misproven time after time.

His two primary opponents were ready to step in

Step in and do what??? continue their fight that was bitter and divisive??

Akin was the only of the three who didn't throw mud at the other two.

Do you think their supporters would be satisfied with the flip of a coin??? Get real.

And BTW the GOP didn't have to choose either of those two, Brunner and Steelman, and wouldn't have.

Others have been asked but have turned it down. They don't want the hassle and fear of saying something wrong and to then be abandoned by those they fight for. And do you blame them???

I’ll get the campaign slogan started. “He’s our Biden, so get over it.”

I proposed the bumper sticker: Vote Numbskull, not McCaskill.

The only reason that Romney/Ryan have not been dragged down by this is that both of them publicly disassociated themselves with Akin as soon as this started.

Akin is an embarrassing egomaniac who is way out of his depth. Sometimes a congressman can slide along without anybody but his homies caring what he says, but when you run for Senate, you’ve moved into a different level. And he wasn’t ready for it.

He may not cost us the Presidency, but it’s very possible that he will cost us the Senate...and a raving leftist will take that seat.

Explain, your big-boy word “toxic” for us. How is Akin toxic? Toxic is just a new buzz word that people throw around the workplace these days by all the drama queens.

Akin “ought to double down on the rape angle and say its time for that fat ass McCaskill stop raping the US taxpayer. And then talk about going to DC to abolish the IRS, kick out the commies, and dismantle the Federal apparatus. Would win in a landslide..”

I agree.

Akin is a conservative. So are we. If he goes down and we lose the Senate, the RINO wing wins. We will be the blame.

Nonsense. If he stays and receives no GOP support and loses, a lot of the blame will fall on the GOP for not supporting him.

What if Josh Mandel in Ohio, Ted Cruz in Texas, Rick Berg in North Dakota, Jeff Flake in Arizona, Deb Fischer in Nebraska, Richard Mourdock in Indiana, Denny Rehberg in Montana, Pete Hoekstra in Michigan, George Allen in Virginia, and others lose their races. Will we be to blame for those losses as well???

Get Real.

Your statement, “If you can’t win, being right doesn’t mean anything”, has been completely misproven time after time.

You've swerved right into the problem: Jesus isn't on the ballot, and Akin's supporters see him as the representative of Jesus' values on the ballot. Most everyone else sees him as foolish or in over his head, or both, and there are many more of the latter than the former.

Why would you want to receive support from a group you consider your opposition?

Foremost, Akin has a number of strong backers within the GOP. He does not consider the GOP by and large to be his opposition. His beef is with a handful of GOPe "party bosses". I am on board with that. Second, why on Earth would you refuse your opponents resources? If they spend it helping you, they can't spend it helping themselves. As long as you don't strike a deal with the Devil to get it, by all means enjoy the free ride.

it’s very possible that he will cost us the Senate...and a raving leftist will take that seat.

And if we lose the Senate because of Akin:

1) A RINO President will be able to move forward with a liberal agenda (as long as it's liberal enough for Harry Reid)

2) ObamaCare is here to stay

3) The media, independents and RINOs get to blame the conservatives for the defeat.

All three points are a NIGHTMARE and sadly avoidable.
