Pull Akin off Science Committee
clinton news network, aka cnn ^ | 8-2012 | some feminist whackjob RAT

(CNN) -- Controversy continues to swirl around the comments made by Todd Akin, Missouri Representative and Senate candidate, that "legitimate rape" would only rarely lead to pregnancy. Initially, the media focused on the fallout of his remarks concerning issues of abortion, sexual violence and the effect on women voters. While Akin has vigorously recanted his remarks, and both Mitt Romney and President Obama have lambasted his statements, only more recently has attention been paid to the fact that Akin sits on the House Committee for Science, Space and Technology.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee's petition for Speaker of the House John Boehner to remove Akin, a Republican, from the House science committee is just starting to gain momentum, and well it should.

The House science committee has oversight on congressional science and technology policy and thereby helps shape the course of billions of dollars of related funding. In other words, Akin -- who is now best known for his folkloric views on reproduction -- has a strong say in determining the long-term scientific progress of our country.

Biffy and his husband are just too cheap to donate.

Biffy, doesn't have a husband, but it seems you, editor-surveyor, has a husband in Todd Akin.

"If it’s a legitimate rape, uh the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let’s assume that maybe that didn’t work or something."

I like how he qualifies his ignorance with that logical gem 'Lets assume, just for the sake of discussion, that reality exists, and the magical anti-rape internal mechanism that I mentioned earlier, doesn't kick in.'

You don't justify the pro-life position with convenient psuedo-science. It does nothing to help the cause. Here's the whole sequence again:

JACO: Ok, so if an abortion could be considered in the case of a tubal pregnancy or something like that, what about in the case of rape? Should it be legal or not?

AKIN: Well, you know, people always want to try and make that as one of those things... "Well, how do you slice this particularly tough sort of ethical question?" It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. Let's assume that maybe that didn't work or something. You know, I think there should be some punishment. But the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.

Response that doesn't make you look like a buffoon: It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand that's really rare. I think there should be some punishment. But the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not the child.

“Yes. And Sheila Jackson Lee, who thinks astronauts have landed on Mars, should be off the space subcommittee. And the idiot, Hank Johnson, who thinks Guam could tip over, should not be on any committee.”

Better still, since they are both “Holder’s People,” we should repatriate them to their native country? in Africa where they can join the local Habitat for Humanity building mud huts for their new “constituents.”

Did I give you the impression I wanted to play stupid games with you?

If anyone stupidly misinterpreted what I said and their feelings were hurt I apologize.

No. We should make an issue of it and try to embarass them.

Ooops I forgot. You can’t embarass a Democrat.

I think, however, that Aiken made a comment so egregiously stupid he should be removed from any position.

Heard him interviewed on Sean Hannity. Aiken is a dope.

Who is less scientific, Aken, who swallowed the theory (proposed by others) that raped women are less likely to conceive, or the Democrats, who swallow the theory that an unborn child is not human?

Todd Akin probably got the view he clumsily expressed on the liklihood of pregnancy from rape based on one or more of the following articles:

“The Indications for Induced Abortion: A Physician’s Perspective,” by Dr. Fred Mecklenburg in Abortion and Social Justice an anthology compiled by Dr. Thomas W. Hilger in 1972. Dr. Mecklenburg was the former chairman of obstetrics at Inova Women’s Hospital in Fall’s Church, Va.

A 1979 book, Handbook on Abortion by Dr. John C. "Jack" Willke, founder of the National Right to Life Committee.

Willke also wrote an article, "Rape Pregnancies are rare" in the Christian Life Resources, April 1999.

So chastise Akin for relying on such articles, and for not being more quantitative in his description of the chances of a rape victim becoming pregnant. But this still doesn't warrant the slavering attacks against him that have been posted on Freerepublic.

We’re fortunate he won’t be back in the House when he loses to McCaskill.

My guess is that hardball is not his favorite show. But then, you were just trying to be clever. Fail.

Sometimes it is helpful to leave the echo chamber and see what the other side is saying. Then we are better able to form our argument to defeat theirs. I have been watching what the RATS have been doing with the Akin issue across the country. It is going to be a sickening display using the issue at their convention. It is a tragedy that they were given this early Christmas gift as an issue to sidestep the real issue. The winning issue for our side is the economy. Don’t get me wrong. Pro-life may be the defining issue of our time. But we can’t advance the position if we don’t have the political power to do so. That means winning the majority of seats. Missouri was a pickup that has been blown.

The RAT position of considering the unborn just worthless tissue is despicable. That is what is so infuriating about Akin, a genuine pro-lifer. He and he alone will be responsible for allowing a horrible pro-abort to return to the Senate. A number of serious pro-life conservatives could replace him and win. His hubris will not allow it. He is so delusional that he damages the pro-life movement without realizing it.

Well, newbie, I’ll cut you some slack. Check the history from 1996 -— 7,172 threads and 78,415 replies. You research my history here and determine whether I am a Democrat.

I have two observations. Unicorn in your screen name is fitting. And from your homepage: Here’s a photo of me and my three dogs.........well, I’m not smart enough to post photos so just pretend you see a photo of me with my three dogs. I’m the one on the left.......with the jowls.....slobbering.

No, you are not smart enough. At least you can recognize it. That’s a start. Advice for the future. Don’t come to a gunfight unarmed.

And here’s the thing: Akin just keeps it up, and keeps it up. He was on with Charlie Brennan (KMOX, St. Louis, that’s in Missouri, where I live and vote) today, and of course this topic was discussed and Akin said he doesn’t even support a woman getting emergency contraception in the immediate aftermath of a rape.

C’mon people....I’m a pro-life, homeschooling Mom of five (and Grammy of one), I live in Missouri, I know who Todd Akin is, I know the political landscape around here fairly well. This does not fly with mainstream American women at all, ok? And that is who the candidates have to convince. Not conservative purists. The women I know consider him a laughingstock.

I get that he said sorry, but sometimes there needs to be penance along with contrition in order to set things right. In this case he would have done us all a favor if he had put his own desires (or whatever drives him) aside, sacrificed his candidacy for the greater (pro-life, conservative)good, and let one of the other conservative, pro-life candidates take his place.

He said sorry, and I forgive him, but I won’t send him any money and I won’t vote for him because in my opinion he is unfit to represent me and unfit to lead. I won’t vote for Claire either. I’m still hoping he’ll do the right thing and step aside.

And those of you who keep arguing on Akin’s behalf, I don’t think you do him any favors by being vitriolic and hateful, and I see a lot of that on FR and most of it is from people who don’t even live in this state. Stop and consider that you may just not have all the information that Missourians, esp. those of us in the greater St. Louis area, have.

Or the common sense to step down. Now we are stuck voting for this asshat in the (now) futile effort to defeat McCaskill, knowing he will lose, and that had he had stepped down, we might have had someone who could win. Instead, we are doomed to another six years of Air Claire (and you know that plane will be flying again once she is re-elected).
