GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today (It's not over)
RedState ^ | Tuesday August 28, 2012 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 08/28/2012 7:31:55 AM PDT by Bigtigermike

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. I’ve been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting.

Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsberg’s effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominee’s campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states.

That issue appears resolved, but several people I’ve spoken to this morning make clear that Team Romney and the RNC establishment are using that compromise as a red herring to distract from two major rules change proposals that would decimate Republican grassroots and prevent upstart political campaigns.

Reports that the floor fight threat is over might be designed to calm the grassroots and get them to ignore what is coming at 2 o’clock.

The first rule to be proposed is one that would give the Republican National Committee the power to change rules between conventions with a three-quarters vote of the RNC. One source tells me, “With a Republican President, of course this is doable. Everybody will roll over if a President Romney asks them too. They’ll be able to get Ben Ginsberg’s proposal next year.”

In other words, if Team Romney prevails in this rules change, they don’t have to worry about Ben Ginsberg not getting his way today on the delegate changes. They’ll be able to do it later when the press and grassroots are not watching.

The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries.

If the right splinters it will not be because of that 25 percent. It will be because the establishment marginalized and runs them off. Which they are rapidly doing.

The point is that there are two choices: we run off and hide in the wilderness, never to be heard from again.

Or, conservatives take over the GOP and call the shots.

Instead of being sufficiently organized to unify behind a single conservative in the primaries and easily marginalize Romney, we got ourselves a RINO.

Instead of unifying behind a RINO+Tea Party VP ticket and then run Ryan after an 8 year conservative track record, we're going to end up with an unrestrained Marxist with a "mandate."

....unless, of course, you are RINO scum yourself.

Wrong again, brainiac. Palin-lover, hard core. You seem to have trouble with logic, though, don't you? I have accepted Sarah's decisions, but you seem to have difficulty with whomever it was that failed to please you. Deal with it, and get over it. I may be a "noob" to you, but at least I can face the situation squarely and recognize what is better for the country at this moment in time. Apparently, you can't.

Trojan Horse scenario, deluxe! Sadly, delegates and posters alike are busy looking at the sparklers when the damn countryside is in flames behind them!

It’s brilliant establishment strategy, but the people are proved at last to be too ignorant to man the gunship.

We are to naive to mount a convention counter attack.

The rules, parliamentarian and procedural rules, are above the pay grade of too many delegates.

And if we, the grassroots, are not able to fight romney now when he is not even the nominee, how in the world are we going to hold his feet to the fire when he will be president??? No guts party, even us. We are already giving up. The guy is not even the nominee and he is already using his power grab and we are already giving up the fight.

What a sad state of affair the American Spirit has become. Can't wait for a 3rd party run by Sarah Palin. At least SHE has the guts to speak out against those power grabbers!!!

In WA State, there was a law suit, by a Pauler, to force the Republicans to free the delegates to vote for Ron Paul. I think that there was another similar law suit in another state, as well.

The WA state Republicans have been having trouble with the Libertarians for a few years. The Libertarians have attempted to disrupt the state and county conventions for several years, now. They keep proposing rule changes and taking exception to every part of the platform, dragging the conventions out, late into the night, with no real gain. They object to every socially conservative line in the platform.

Mitt Romney's actions, to stuff conservatives in the basement, silenced, have got me quite frustrated. Angry enough to write stuff like that.

You must be really proud to spew stuff like that, huh? Real patriotic prose. How'd you last from 1999 till now at FR with glorious stuff like that?

It was only VERY RECENTLY that Jim Robinson VERY RELUCTANTY decided to VERY LIGHTLY support Mitt Romney.

So I bet I continue on this forum long after you are a smoldering zot-dot.

Almost 4 years fighting for conservatism and constitutional principlies I am ready for the 3rd party. My group has tried to work in the party but they are corrupt. Greed and crony capitalism is what they care about. they have sold our country to the globalist.I will not vote for Romney/Ryan. Maybe the RINOS need to see what Obama will do along with globalist in our party.

Mr. RomneyCARE is worse than Obama (who is recognized
as evil and a traitor, already).

Mr. RomneyCARE, author of DEATH PANELS,
is nothing but a saboteur RINO.
Always has been. Always will be.

His ONLY enemy are conservatives.

It's one thing I hate about conventions. To the GOPe wonks it looks like a clever ploy and a brilliant maneuver. That it serves to pull the rug out from under everything their boss got from conservatives from naming Ryan doesn't seem to register.

These are the people who are holding our country hostage against defection to a third party with the 0bama threat, which is a legitimate threat just as a kidnapper's gun to his victim is a legitimate threat. They never learn, they never get it, and they walk away from every defeat with the conviction intact that they're smarter than everyone else.

Yeah, the Paulers might lose this time, but it is the influence of the Paulers on the inside the beltway Republicans that has brought this whole thing to a head.

Oh, it didn’t take much convincing to portray the social conservatives as ignorant hay seeds, “clinging to their God and guns”, but the Paulers have been working hard, just the same. Now, that they have succeeded in splitting the party, they should be happy. They got what they wanted.

If Romney loses as a result of the Libertarian disruption, Obama will be the only one who wins. I hope you and your friends are satisfied and happy.

They don’t call it the stupid party for nothing. I have to say though that I am proud of my Texas GOP. Just got off the phone with them and they are not going to back down or put up with the rule changes. None of them.

GO TEXAS GOP!!

All that and he’s still better than Obama. I’d rather ride his ass for 4 years than deal with a third world dictator.

Thanks for playing.

I thought the Ryan pick said something about Romney's supposed transformation - looks like it was just a smokescreen instead.

Your points are not lost on me, Laz. I understand fully, and I'm not comfy with any of this either. But I am 100% Tea Party, make no mistake. Here's how I try to rationalize it: I think the Tea Party needs to adopt a take on Arnold's phrase in The Terminator:

WE'LL BE BACK! ( do you get my drift?)

Yes, we'll be back! But until we can take over completely, I'm not going to cut my own nuts off...I'll only have to sew them back on....and what's the point in that? Might as well hold my nose, vote the ticket, and then pound that old Budweiser into me, and go get 'em tomorrow.

A truly conservative administration is not going to happen over night. It's sort of two steps forward, one back, but that's still going forward. Tea Party progress is not going to slow down either...not if I can help in any small way. Count on it. If they split, I'm with them. If they infiltrate and take over, I'm with them. Always.
