GOP Rules Committee Rapidly Moving to Shut Out Grassroots at 2:00 p.m. Today (It's not over)
RedState ^ | Tuesday August 28, 2012 | Erick Erickson

At 2:00 p.m. today in Tampa, the Republican National Committee, led by Team Romney, is moving to shut down conservative grassroots activists. I’ve been on the phone with several individuals involved in the fight who tell me that the fight is not over, it is only just starting.

Specifically, the media is reporting that the rules fight is over because Team Romney is abandoning Ben Ginsberg’s effort to allow candidates to control delegates. Under an initial proposal, delegates would, in effect, be chosen by the presumed nominee’s campaign and not based on votes in the states and delegate selection processes in the states.

That issue appears resolved, but several people I’ve spoken to this morning make clear that Team Romney and the RNC establishment are using that compromise as a red herring to distract from two major rules change proposals that would decimate Republican grassroots and prevent upstart political campaigns.

Reports that the floor fight threat is over might be designed to calm the grassroots and get them to ignore what is coming at 2 o’clock.

The first rule to be proposed is one that would give the Republican National Committee the power to change rules between conventions with a three-quarters vote of the RNC. One source tells me, “With a Republican President, of course this is doable. Everybody will roll over if a President Romney asks them too. They’ll be able to get Ben Ginsberg’s proposal next year.”

In other words, if Team Romney prevails in this rules change, they don’t have to worry about Ben Ginsberg not getting his way today on the delegate changes. They’ll be able to do it later when the press and grassroots are not watching.

The second rules change would front load winner takes all primaries.

Are you saying that a minority faction of 25 percent or so does not count? Perhaps that 25 percent should completely abandon the GOP and start a third party. It would be guaranteed the GOP would never win another election. Of course I’m all for a strong third party that does not include the traitors of the elite. It’s time the voices of true freedom are heard loud and clear.

No, it’s not just the Ron Paul people. This is traditional grassroots as well.

If disruption in prime time is the price that must be paid -- so be it.

Small price to pay indeed for such a big return on investment to Obama.

These “grassroots activists” who caused this whole mess are Ron Paul supporters who lied about their allegiance in order to get delegate slots. They truly believe in a Ron Paul insurgency.

I agree that changing these rules would have long-term unintended consequences and would not be a good thing, but the original intent was to shut down an infiltration by dishonest people who are trying very hard to make trouble at the convention.

Doesn't matter who it's directed at. Just like obama, we do not need anyone have more power over us to take our voice away. I was suppose to be a delegate, but dropped out because Romney won. Look at all he has done already to prove his liberalism. Not 100% pro-life like he said, not 100% for traditional marriage like he said, and is not severely conservative like he said. Why take away the power of the voters and give it to someone who lied and can't be trusted? We are conservatives and not liberals who walk blindly lock step behind their leader.

"I’m sorry but the main proponent of these rule changes to wipe out Tea Party and grassroots opposition to the Establishment is Romney’s campaign lawyer, Ben Ginsberg."

I find it extremely odious that Ben Ginsberg- a supporter of, and donor to gay marriage causes - somehow gets to usurp all of the power within the party and gets to force millions of others to accept his (and Jeb's, the GOP-e's, etc.) personal views, without opposition. This is totalitarianism. This is Obamaesque...

If they are so terrified someone will go off script why doesn’t Romney meet with the Pauls and make some kind of deal? That’s what someone with an oz of political skill would do. If he can’t even deal with repubulicans how is he going to deal with the democrats when he’s president? He can put his boot on delegates neck in the convention but as President that will not be an option.

I suppose you first need to define “we”.

Like Alcee Hastings, the Geriatric Old Plotters just make it up as they go along.

I am a Conservative - not a Republican. Rule changes like this are just another in a long string of “We don’t want conservatives” by the GOPe.
I will be voting 3rd party at the top of the ticket and conservative down ticket.

I am a firm believer that the GOP has lost it’s way and is no longer the party that supports my views. I will therefore use my vote to further the cause of conservatives by influencing the major / minor party outcome in accordance with the laws of my state.

I will not only join but will support and work for a 3rd party that is a Conservative party.

Ditto. I don’t think Rush would like ditto and third party used in the same sentence. The republicans are assuming they got the base; romney kept saying he got them. They better start polling the base and not just “republican” I got a call & it must have been linked close to the rnc, because he started to ask me why I would not vote for romney, and he was mad. I made it clear that us little people know about romney’s cheating, lies, and most of all his liberalism. He said fine and hung up.

But we want OPEN CONVENTIONS so any minority faction of 25% or so can disrupt the convention in prime time?

Who is doing the disrupting?

Ben Ginsburg, et al,!

They want Akin out because he is going to lose because he said a really stupid thing. We need the Senate and his hubris may just stop us from getting it.

He’s been at the public trough long enough.

Rule 12 allows the Republican National Committee (with only a 3/4 vote) the power to amend the party’s rules without a vote by the full Republican National Convention, without any input from grassroots, delegates, and state leadership. That si a complete power grab by the GOP establishment. Paulbots just gave them an excuse.

Is this cat fully out of the bag now for everyone to see? Will anyone still disagree and claim there is no GOPe faction working inside the GOP? Anyone?

Freedom is not free. Anyway these rules changes would not affect Obama and this year -- but 2016. Am I right???

They didn’t iron this out months ago because steam rolling delegates was impossible. Stealth assault and ambush in a quick surprise strike is has fewer risks of failing.

You said it! Declaring victory early diminishes clarity and readiness to combat an avalanche of procedural and parlimentarian maneuvers.
