(CNN) -- Former longtime U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter was battling for his life early Tuesday after he was recently diagnosed with a "serious form of cancer," a source close to his office told CNN.
Specter, who has overcome numerous serious illnesses over the past two decades, including a brain tumor and non-Hodgkins lymphoma, was diagnosed six weeks ago with the new form of cancer, the specifics of which are being closely shielded by his family.
He had "a big flareup" of the disease Monday night, the source said.
Specter served in U.S. Senate from 1980 until 2011, making him the longest-serving senator from Pennsylvania.

Lost my father to it February and I wouldn’t wish it on my arch enemy. That being said I hope if he succumbs to it that it takes him quickly, when it comes to cancer quality of life beats out quantity any day of the week towards the end.
I didn’t pray for Ted Kennedy, and I sure as hell won’t pray for Specter.
Enough with these nasty posts. Its not Hitler who is dying. Its Arlen Specter. Anyone who thinks he is such a bad person that we should be happy about his death or that he should “burn in Hell” has completely lost perspective.
Where’s all that arrogance now Arlen? In just a matter of a few short years, you’re name will be forgotten. When somebody asks “what is an arlen spector/” most wil reply with, “I think its some sort of measuring device or something.”

Believe me, I thoroughly disagreed with the man's politics. Yes, he, along with hundreds of others, epitomized what is wrong with politics But we are talking about a father, a husband and most importantly one of God's creations. If we really believe in Christ (yes I am definitely questioning the faith of those who are celebrating condition of this man) then we HAVE to pray for him.

Single handily kept Robert Bork off the Supreme Court.....this man was the consumate Judas. Still I will refrain from wishing anything on him that would cause physical pain to him or mental pain to his family. He has to live with the mental part on his own!!!
