" force automakers to meet a standard equivalent to 54.5 miles per gallon.
" LOL!! Obama still pandering to his base, and angering most of the American people by showing his utter contempt for our intelligence. Most motorcycles don't get this MPG : )

I wish I could discuss one conversation with an auto gnome, but I can't...
The other has noted, they can do it but at what cost...
You have no idea what a cluster this is...

These fuel standards represent the single most important step weve ever taken to reduce our dependence on foreign oil, President Obama said in a statement Tuesday, noting that by 2025 cars will get almost twice the mileage they provide today. GREAT, that will make up for about 20% of the 0bama and Pelosi banning of domestic oil exploration and the associated jobs that go along with it.
Idiot tyrants.

The tiny Honda hatchback of the late 1970s was RATED at 54mpg. Car was really best for commuting ,not family,AND being so small ,could not offer as much occupant safety.
Insane people think their wishes can be imposed on reality.

Agreed...It's pie in the sky to require that kind of mileage or its equivalent and if they could even come close it would cost the consumer a heck of a lot more than $2000 more per vehicle.

Why on earth would a congress ever turn over such wide regulatory powers to an agency? I don’t get it. The implication is that without further congressional approval, the EPA could mandate 100mpg.

Maybe his plan is to make all roads go downhill as with the country.

Yes, but a solar/wind/hydrogen powered unicorn sprinkled with fairy dust can, and can do so for half the cost of a Honda Accord. Or at least Al Gore says something like that.

Another step by Obama and Rats to advance mass transportation, force green energy on us and buy enviro votes for this election. Yeah and forget buying a trailer, boat, snowmobiles, or anything that has to be towed.
These "compassionate" micromanaging haters of freedom are doing a wonderful job on the economy.

The EPA needs to be abolished or at least gutted to the bone and neutered as far as making regulations.

I suppose they could retool, and make a carbon car......at a cost of an additional 10,000+ per car : )
