A deaf 3-year-old from Nebraska is being asked by the school district to change his name, his family alleges, because the way he refers to himself in sign language resembles “weapons.”
Apparently the Grand Island school district has a policy that prevents students from bringing “any instrument…that looks like a weapon” to school, and now hands can be considered “instruments.”
“Anybody that I have talked to thinks this is absolutely ridiculous. This is not threatening in any way,” Hunter Spanjer’s grandmother Janet Logue said.
Brian Spanjer, the boy’s father, added: “It’s a symbol. It’s an actual sign, a registered sign, through S.E.E. [Signing Exact English]”
Hunter signs his name by crossing his middle and index fingers– leaving his thumbs up– and then wagging his hands.

Kid reported aboard ship and was taken the the Chief Boatswains Mate.
The Chief ‘gave the speech’ and asked the kid his name.
“John, Chief”.
The Chief started to tear him a new one, explaining Military Protocol in regards to names, rank, how to address seniors and he ended by saying “Don’t they teach you anything in Boot Camp”?
KID “When I left Boot Camp they told me to introduce myself to you as John”.
Boats “Last name KID, LAST NAME”
Kid “Darling, Chief, John Darling”.
Pregnant pause....”Well John, you just report to 2nd Div”.

Any school or district displaying their incompetence in such manner should face mass firings.
I am certain that you understand that these “zero tolerance” insanities, are established by the school boards. The school boards are made up of parents and they establish these "insanities" out of:
1) Genuine need
2) Frustration.
3) Anger at a situation.
4) A reaction to a current event.
So who would you like to fire the school board that makes the policies, or the administration that enforces the policy established by others?

The school administrators are federally paid union workers that generally subscribe to the will and spirit of the socialist mentality that’s primarily responsible for securing their paychecks.

Remove your child. Find a way. Anything is better than subjecting your child to abuse because that’s what government schools are: Child Abuse.
I’m sure you realize that the insane part of these insanities are on site calls, and in such cases as discussed in this thread, totally incomprehensible, indefensible and stunning indicators of complete incompetence?
I am real sure that some school board went to the nth in defining their policy to even include the legally given names of deaf children.
Or as has happened before, miniature plastic toy soldiers? Or a drawing by a child? or a picture in a book? the list of inability to deal functionally with the world in general when it comes to “zero tolerance lists” is long and stunning in its stupidity.
And again, these are on site calls made by either a site administrator who shouldn’t be allowed to administer anything more complex than asking “want fries with that?” or a teacher of the same level of dealing with complexity.

This is the kind of dumb@$$ thing that gives educators a bad name and would make me not want to admit I was one (Just like the *meteorologists* who claim global warming is a fact. I can't help what others think or say. *sigh*)
I took him out in the hall and told him I knew what that meant and made him wash his hands off with soap and water.
I told the AP in case he did it again and called his mother that evening using the TTY service. She was flustered and I told her he wasn't in trouble this time and we ended up having a good laugh over it.
He came in the next day and told me His mother was making him apologize to me and the class.
No fuss no muss and never another problem.

If this is remotely true - wow. How intolerably intolerable of the school admin.
Here’s a kid who can’t hear or read his name (yet), nor has he learned to utter it for the benefit of the hearing. But he’s supposed to give up what identity he has for the sake of rude, stupid people who were blessed at birth with all their senses except for “common”.
Cry discrimination! and let slip the lawyers of war.
(Normally I wouldn’t encourage any sort of tort, but such idiocy must not be - er - tolerated. Two can play this game.)
