NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The Obama administration finalized new fuel economy rules Tuesday that within 12 years will almost double today's standard for cars and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon. The rules, which have been in the works for several years, will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new cars. But in the long run, regulators say, drivers will spend less on gas, outweighing the additional cost at the dealership. They say the rules will also help reduce the nation's oil imports from OPEC by about half.

54.5 CAFE is about 26mpg EPA for a light truck and 44mpg EPA for a compact car. In between for different sized cars.
CAFE numbers are different than the EPA numbers.
The rules, which have been in the works for several years, will add thousands of dollars to the cost of new cars.....>>
Well that oughtta get this sluggish economy rolling...
The BS is, of course, that the Dems will have gas at $20.00/gallon by then. So, your 2024 model 50K strippo truck WILL be economical, at that price. How convenient.
Romney’s website claims that every single regulation will be tested against how it will hurt the economy and the taxpayer.
We shall see. Clearly, these types of rules need to be among the first casualties.
I just figured out if I want my new Dodge Challenger to come in a 300+ hp V6 or a Hemi.
If I can get it for the right number, Hemi. Obummer can bite me.
The new CAFE standards passed into law has one critical flaw — it ignores physics.
We’ll be driving around in smaller and lighter vehicles, which statistically equates to increased death in the event of an accident.
No thanks, I’ll keep my wife and kids rolling in my HUMMER for as along as I can!
And I pray no SMART car accidents come my way!
According to Government Motors and EeeeeeePA, the Volt does better than that now.

“General Motors announced the Chevy Volt will carry a rating of 93 mpg while running purely on electricity, and 37 mpg in so-called charge-sustaining mode.”
“While the EPA tries to pin 60 mpg as a single composite number for the Volts efficiency, ... “
“And with the optional Volt belly-mount mower attachment ... “
This is akin to legislating that Pi = 3
CAFE needs to die.
Gee, if "rules" can double fuel economy, why not make it 500 mpg?
Yes we can!
There’s only so much energy you can squeeze out of an energy source. There comes a point when you can’t squeeze a lemon any more.
“This is akin to legislating that Pi = 3”
BINGO! The effect of these rules will be to effectively outlaw new cars. We’ll all be putting around in fifty year old derelicts like they do in Cuba.
And then will come the vehicle miles traveled tax. Better milage means less tax revenue from gasoline sales. Driver will not see a reduction in the cost of owning an automobile.
Same with that unreasonably stubborn global warming, it is not following the EPA "rules."
Communist agenda donks declare the rules are a tax...
.
A billboard along Rt. 30 in York, PA states, “YOU CAN’T SOLVE THE ENERGY CRISIS WITH SOLAR BICYCLES!” I agree.
But seriously, this kind of thing is a good example of the death by 1000 cuts that is killing or country. 4 more years of Obama, and we'll bleed out..
General Motors announced the Chevy Volt will carry a rating of 93 mpg while running purely on electricity...”
Electricity comes in gallons now?
Direct-injection turbo-Diesel sedans already meet this requirement.
Then why is the EPA making it so difficult to produce these vehicles?
I agree but what really bugs me is our dependence on middle east oil is effectively a huge tax on the American consumer that is being used to fund the Islamist war against this country.
We needed to end our dependence on middle east oil in the 70’s through energy self sufficiency and innovation
