Akin’s Options
The National Review ^ | August 29, 2012 | John Fund

............[Mary Matalin]urged that Akin drop out, to be replaced by Ann Wagner, a former co-chair of the RepublicanNationalCommittee, who is the GOP nominee for Akin’s vacant House seat.

Akin “may be dug in, but he’s not going to have a shovel to continuing digging, because he’s not going to have any money,” Matalin told ABC. “We’re going to win Missouri. Ann Wagner is going to end up being our candidate. The party is going to get Ann Wagner in.”

Wagner aides hotly dispute that their candidate is involved in any negotiations about switching races. But sources close to Akin acknowledge that he is monitoring developments in the race, including campaign donations and his standing in the polls, and that it isn’t out of the question he will change his mind.

Should Akin decide that his sliding poll numbers — he now trails McCaskill by ten points and many of his own supporters want him to exit the race — dictate dropping out, he will certainly want a say in who replaces him. John Brunner, a wealthy businessman, and Sarah Steelman, a former state treasurer, both challenged him in the GOP primary and are viewed as unacceptable by Akin forces. On the other hand, Wagner is respected in the Akin camp and a sufficiently conservative presence to satisfy Tea Party members who are suspicious of anyone the Missouri GOP establishment might anoint.

Should Akin leave the race and be replaced by Wagner, both candidates would have to petition a court to get off the ballot before September 25. But state election laws would allow a swap in which Wagner took Akin’s place and he reclaimed the Republican nomination for his House seat. His current district leans strongly Republican; he would be likely to hold it against a Democratic opponent this fall...........

I believe we would have the same result if we’d just stop hammering the guy.

one Akin supporter who is a Missouri delegate told me. “Todd would be treated with dignity and could go back to the House

Now that's a good deal for Akin and the conservative movement! We need Akin's beliefs in the House.

Akin, should have simply, recognized what he did was suicide this election cycle, stepped aside and could have returned in the future to fight again, instead he refused to recognize a serious temporary wound, and through another act of stupidity (the first being believing that rape victims are less likely to become pregnant due to magical uteruses) turned this temporary serious wound into a mortal one.

Had he stepped aside quickly, laid low, he could have returned in another cycle and kept on trucking politically. Instead he insisted on sticking around and basically become a millstone around the entire party and cause. He’s now without any chance of returning to politics after this election, unless he would miraculously win, which ain’t gonna happen.

I’m a conservative, I’m Pro Life, and if all he was being attacked for was using the term “legitimate rape” I’d defend the guy, but him truly believing rape has a lower incident of pregnancy than consentual sex is beyond ignorant.

And before you fools come out of the woodwork trying to argue stress affects pregnancy, here’s the FACTS.. 1 time sex act whether consentual or forced has the EXACT same statistical chance of leading to pregnancy!!! PERIOD.

“This is a way to leave Todd Atkin in his house seat and get the Missouri Senate seat, and the Senate for the GOP. We need to work together on this.”

It seems Akin is beginning o realize the reality of his position..
I don’t think he wants to go down as a pariah within his own party, and go through a political shunning that will isolate him for the rest of his life.
These facts will eventually win out, as will having him have to listen to the MSM/dems drag his name through the mud next week on national TV.

A Missouri poll has Akin back on top today. He has good support from Independents. If the Republicans would stop repudiating him and support him, it appears he could have the best shot at winning this. It will be interesting to see if this shows in other polls next week.

He better not. The jerks calling for him to drop out are the same Romney lovers who are ruining the Republican Party. Look the guy is beating McCaskle according to the latest poll. I know that disappoints you but too bad.
_______________

What poll are you looking at? Every poll i have seen, except PPP (a Dem outfit) has him down. You can call me a “jerk” or a “Romney lover,” but the fact is this: replace him with a conservative, pro life, woman, and McCaskill loses. Keep him and it is very much in doubt. Why take that chance?

“A new poll paid for by the Family Research Council, a pro-life group”

No bias here. Probably paid for by McCaskill.

Why take that chance?

Because he won the primary. We are not a dictatorship where we force people out of running for office. The pressure put on him is unsat. Today the poll shows him 3 points ahead and counting. We have been talking about it all day.

There is a poll out there that shows Akin ahead. It’s a group who endorsed the man and were strongly behind them.

You know what, Todd, in the real world, if you get fired, you don’t get to pick your replacement.

Here we go yet again having the Missouri GOP OR the RNC or the MSM telling us who our a candidate will be. There are committee men and women who are supposed to "pick" a candiate but I am glad they have done our homework for us! FURNC.

Ann Wagner recently lost her father. Her daughter was/is hospitalized for a serious illness. Just not sure now if she would go for this position...
